The Founding Members of Black Women Lawyers of Los Angeles 36' x 48" Mixed Media on Canvas by Attorney Errol Cook About the Painting: This painting was inspired by a 1975 black and white photograph taken after a BWL luncheon that was held inside the Medallion Restaurant which was located on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. The founding members of Black Women Lawyers of Los Angeles represented in this painting were seated on the stairway of the restaurant that led to an a...rea that would later be the location of the first BWL Pre-Thanksgiving Cocktail Sip. Pictured in the original photograph and represented in this painting are: Judge Maxine Thomas, Brenda Shockley, Ivyea Dailey-Roberts, Anselyene Abraham-Lloyd, Lola McLapin-Grant, Comm. H. Elizabeth Harris, Judge Patti Jo McKay , Shirley A. Henderson, Edith Parker Corlette, Marguerite Archie-Hudson, Beatrice Lawson, Helen Rice Frederick, Margo Bouchet, Judge Marion Obera, Michele Washington-McLaughlin, Justice Vaino Spencer, Constance Bynum, Louella Taylor, Audrey Jones, Patricia Davenport, Sandra L. Carter, Judge Florence Pickard, Estella Dooley, Lois Duncan and Sheryl Meshack among the few. Founding members not pictured are Judge Irma Brown, Linda Ferguson and the Congresswoman Yvonne Brathwaite Burke. A special thanks to Attorney Shirley Henderson (pictured in the original photograph)who was especially helpful in doing the research in placing the names to those pictured in the photograph and painting. #thecookartgallery #lawyerartist1906

Happy Thanksgiving!! The Old Fire Station by Errol Cook. A reboot of one of my favorite historical paintings and the picture from which inspired it. I added and modified quite a few things that differ from the photo to the original painting to the newest painting. In the newest version I took some artistic liberties by adding more vibrant colors, a fire hose, shovel, axe, bricks, making the building generic and a, of course, a dog. Yes, the dog does have a helmet. The ori...ginal painting was done in oils whereas the reboot was done in oil and acrylic. It’s really fun to paint fire fighters. Please messenger me for inquiries. The untold history of the Los Ángeles Fire Department is very interesting. This link provides the history of the original photograph and the history of L.A.’s African-American fire fighters and Fireman Sam Haskins. https://www.lafire.com/black_ff/black.htm
