Fond farewell to Laura Vary! Eco-Alpha's environmental technician, Laura Vary, has embarked upon a new adventure in marine sciences. She has recently moved to Oregon and will be transitioning to a full time position as a graduate research assistant in the Marine Resource Management Master's Program at Oregon State University. While there, she will investigate the potential of adaptation in Bering Sea groundfishes to ocean warming to understand how populations may change in t...he future. Laura said, "I have absolutely loved my time at Eco-Alpha, where I found a wonderful mentor in Melanie Harrison Okoro, Ph.D. and great colleagues. This time gave me hands-on professional experience that I know will be useful for the pursuit of my future career in marine and coastal conservation." We wish Laura all the best! Your family at #EcoAlpha.

The Delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) is a species near extinction due to environmental changes, submerged invasive aquatic vegetation, and human modification of the Delta. Submerged aquatic vegetation, like Egeria densa (previously featured), modify water conditions to such an extent that Delta smelt are displaced. The Delta smelt have a lifespan of roughly one year, and thus their declines serve as an immediate signal of widespread problems within the Delta. In 2015, o...nly 6 Delta smelt were located through scientific surveys, signaling a crash of their population. At Eco-Alpha, we are ecosystem managers and work to support the conservation of the ecosystem upon which the Delta smelt relies. Eco-Alpha is proud to work with local, state, and federal entities to support management efforts to protect and conserve the cornerstone of this region. Illustration by René C. The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta supports a huge sector of the CA economy and provides water to nearly two-thirds of the state’s population. Eco-Alpha has completed numerous projects to conserve and properly manage the Delta, and our clients are often stakeholders who rely deeply on the ecosystem services the Delta provides. A few ecological and economic fun facts about the Delta: The Delta absorbs water runoff from agriculture and floods, mitigating the pollution load enteri...ng our rivers and spreading to our coastline. The Delta decreases the impacts of severe storms and supports our groundwater systems. The Delta provides freshwater for millions of acres of farmland, thereby supporting a cornerstone of the California economy. The soil in areas where the Delta remains relatively natural (free of human modification) removes carbon from the air and stores it for an extended period of time. The Delta is currently composed of nearly seven hundred miles of waterways, and yet this number represents only three percent of its historic expanse. Eco-Alpha’s biologist and program managers have expertise working in the Delta ecosystem and strive to identify best-practice management strategies to mitigate the threats contributing to the decline of its native plants, animals, fish populations, and the ecosystem services it provides to Californians. -- #EcoAlpha #EnvironmentalManagement #SacramentoSanJoaquinDelta #DeltaRestoration #DeltaSmelt #EndangeredSpecies #SacramentoFisheries #EcosystemManagement #EnvironmentalSciences #SacramentoRiver #SanJoaquin #InvasiveSpecies #InvasiveAquaticSpecies Photo courtesy of ShutterStock and Jeffrey T. Egeria densa (common name: Brazilian waterweed), is submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) and an invasive plant species in the Sacramento San-Joaquin Delta ecosystem. Eco-Alpha recently assisted California Department of Boating and Waterways with the assessment of a new management tool - air bubble curtains - to slow down the movement of water and control invasive aquatic vegetation like Egeria densa in the Sacramento San-Joaquin Delta. We are committed to identifying best-prac...tice management tools to curtail non-native plants while supporting native ecosystems. Stay tuned for the full blog feature on our work in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.
