This young Pug had a traumatic eyelid laceration that was repaired elsewhere and unfortunately failed to heal properly. Here is his before and 2 week post-op result after reconstruction with us. It is very important that the repaired eyelid margin must be apposed correctly to avoid notch defects that can irritate the cornea in the future. The scar will continue to return to normal pigmentation over the next few months. . . . #eyecareforanimalssandiego #eyecareforanimals #pugsofinstagram #veterinaryophthalmology #eyelidlaceration

Young Cane Corso dog before and 1 month after bilateral ‘cherry eye’ surgery. Giant breeds like this are prone to failure and often need special modifications/techniques. Correcting this condition early will prevent painful problems such as dry eye in the future! . . . #eyecareforanimalssandiego #eyecareforanimals #canecorso #veterinaryophthalmology #cherryeye

Retinal image of a dog demonstrating a focal area of retinal dysplasia at the top left. This is an abnormal development and growth of the retina resulting in retinal folds, rosettes and sometimes retinal detachment. This change can be inherited but also acquired from exposure to infectious disease, vitamin deficiencies, and toxins. . . #eyecareforanimalssandiego #eyecareforanimals #retinaldysplasia #retinalfolds #veterinaryophthalmology #clearview #retinalcamera #optibrand #volkoptical

This geriatric dog presented for a progressive eyelid mass that was starting to cause irritation and eyelid drooping. Due to his age we elected to perform a debulking procedure under local anesthetic with a carbon dioxide laser. Here is his result 2 weeks post-op with better eyelid position and comfort. Luckily it turned out to be a benign growth called a melanocytoma. . . . #eyecareforanimalssandiego #eyecareforanimals #CO2laser #melanocytoma #eyelidmass #veterinaryophthalmology

Our patient @cutepicsfrankie has cataracts and retinal degeneration but that doesn’t slow him down! A dog’s sense of smell and hearing become heightened and allow them to adjust when their vision declines. He’s a great example of how vision impaired and blind dogs can live happy, healthy lives with the proper encouragement and training #blinddogs #retinaldegeneration #cataracts #yorkshireterrier #eyecareforanimals #eyecareforanimalssandiego #veterinaryophthalmology

This geriatric cat presented with lower lid entropion (folding in of the eyelid) that can be painful and cause ulceration from the surrounding hair rubbing against the cornea. Although permanent surgical correction is the treatment of choice, since this cat had other health problems and would not tolerate a protective cone we opted to inject hyaluronic acid filler into the tissue beneath the lid to correct the entropion. No cone or stitches needed! Swipe left to see his after result at his two week checkup . . . #eyecareforanimalssandiego #eyecareforanimals #entropion #dermalfiller #hyaluronicacid #veterinaryophthalmology #catsofinstagram @ Eye Care for Animals - San Diego, CA

This guy just got over a severe corneal injury and was at risk of needing to have surgery or even eye removal. We treated him with an aggressive medical protocol that took several weeks but he is finally healed and avoided surgery His owners invested in some protective eyewear to avoid problems in the future #eyecareforanimalssandiego #eyecareforanimals #bostonterriersofinstagram #bostonterrier #doggles #veterinaryophthalmology #cornealulcer

Here is an example of hyphema which is the medical term for when blood pools within the front of the eye. This can have several different causes including trauma, clotting abnormalities, high blood pressure, and cancer to name a few. When this occurs it is important to get an ocular exam in addition to a full physical exam, bloodwork, and blood pressure to rule out systemic health concerns that can cause this change. Often times ocular changes are the first visible clue to a more serious systemic disease underlying in veterinary patients. . . #eyecareforanimalssandiego #eyecareforanimals #hyphema #hypertension #retinaldetachment #bloodpressure #coagulopathy #veterinaryophthalmology

Here is an example of an ectopic cilia in a patient. This is an abnormal hair that grows out of the conjunctiva underneath the eyelid and causes contact irritation and often times ulceration on the cornea. We usually see these pop up in the first couple years of the dogs life and if they are causing problems they should be removed ASAP! If you have a young dog that is not healing from a corneal ulcer in a timely fashion or gets them repeatedly your vet should be checking for these abnormal hairs or eyelid abnormalities . . . #eyecareforanimalssandiego #eyecareforanimals #veterinaryophthalmology #ectopiccilia @ Eye Care for Animals - San Diego, CA
