Witness the serenity of the bonsai tree. In this video created by Cal State University Long Beach student, Travis Nagaoka, learn about our Bonsai collection made possible by a generous donation from David Butch Frattalone, who was a CSULB Alumni and professor of Horticulture at Long Beach City College. https://youtu.be/5VYng4higaI #CSULB #bonsaitree #japanesegarden

On July 7th, Japan is full of decorations for #tanabata star festival, when deities Orihime & Hikoboshi meet in the night sky on the seventh day of the seventh lunar moon. People celebrate by writing wishes on tanzaku paper strips and hanging them on bamboo. What are your wishes?

The Japanese Garden is still closed until further notice. We thank you for your patience while we make plans to reopen. Until we can be together again, we will share scenes of summer from the garden and will keep you updated on our activities.

It’s #ChildrensDay (Kodomo no Hi) in Japan so we are celebrating our little ones today! In past years, the Japanese Garden has done koi fish art projects, flown koi nobori, explored koi culture, and displayed Boy’s Day dolls to commemorate the children. Koi swim upstream, and can even leap out of the water and notoriously over waterfalls. On May 5th, koi symbolize parent’s hopes for their boys to be determined and strong. On Children’s Day, the hope is for all children to be happy.

Happy #EarthDay! Even though the Japanese Garden is closed right now, the CHHS garden staff are still hard at work maintaining birch trees, shaping shrubbery, and feeding the koi fish. The staff is also committed to sustainability efforts. For example, we recently planted drought-tolerant black birch trees. While we can’t visit in person right now, these photos offer some virtual serenity.

The Peach Blossom Festival was a hit with attendees. Koi fish creations featuring temari string balls, bingo, otedama bean bag play and everyday Japanese seasonal items complimented our deluxe display in the tea house ... and of course the beautiful garden itself! Come see the hinadan of gorgeous dolls this week in the tea house before they go away for the year. #FamilyFun #HinaMatsuri
