The Ebell of Los Angeles 27.04.2021

Today we celebrate another LA legend, Katherine Sui Fun Cheung, America's first Chinese American female pilot! Cheung was born in China but moved to Los Angeles at the age of 17 to study music at the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music and later Cal Poly Pomona and USC. Inspired by her pilot cousin, her aspirations took to the sky. She began taking pilot lessons with the Chinese Aeronautical Association in Los Angeles. On March 30, 1932, she was awarded her pilot’s license. ...Not only were there then only about 200 women in the country who had a pilot’s license, Cheung was the first Asian American woman licensed to fly and was widely reported in the press as such. She later became a member of notable female aviation group, the Ninety-Nines, and became friends with its founder, Amelia Earhart. She passed away in 2003 and is buried with her husband in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills. See more

YOU'RE INVITED! Tomorrow, join us in celebrating this year's Rest Cottage Association Grant Recipients! 15 local non-profits have been selected, 3 of which are new to the Ebell. Join us on ZOOM to learn more about these wonderful local organizations that support women in need and their children in our community. The Ebell Rest Cottage Association, more than 100 years old, is the Ebell Club’s oldest philanthropy and the best example of its commitment to Women Helping Women.... It’s Bylaws call for the Rest Cottage Association to use the income from its endowment for charitable purposes designed to benefit females, who, for whatever reason, are in need of loving care and helpful assistance of a charitable nature. Today, nearly 100 years later, it still does.
