New Golfers’ Month - Part 7 While the information I have posted is great for purchasing clubs piece by piece, some manufacturers do sell complete... sets with a golf bag included. This is for someone who wants everything at once and doesn’t mind a lack of customization. The juniors I have worked with have started with @u.s.kidsgolf, @taylormadegolf and @cobragolf age-appropriate sets. Additionally, my teens and adults have found success with @callawaygolf and @topflite_golf so there are multiple options to choose from. For full sets, Budget would be under $200, Mid-Range would be $200 to $400 and over $400 would be Premium by today’s pricing. New Golfers’ Month - Part 6 As a new golfer, you should have at least one wedge in the bag. Wedges are high-lofted specialty clubs that are usef...ul for touch shots around the green. Part of the specialty is the meaty nub under the club called the bounce. I have seen 4 degrees to 14 degrees of bounce among multiple manufacturers. The bounce is what helps you get out of bunkers and thick grass because it pushes down whatever is underneath the golf ball. More bounce is ideal for beginners since it allows for margin of error. I’d recommend 10 or more degrees when purchasing a sand wedge. The number for the bounce is typically found on the sole of the club or the manufacturer’s spec sheet. For wedges, Budget would be under $60, Mid-Range would be $60 to $140 and over $140 would be Premium by today’s pricing. If you are looking to purchase a used wedge, make sure the grooves aren’t completely worn. Some of you might think this setup is overkill but, the cone is for the shank; the white rod for early extension the shank comes from the early extension the early extension comes from too much weight on the toes at setup If I set up correctly, my butt will get closer to the alignment rod and my club will travel away from the cone. However, that is impossible to know without video or mirror feedback. Make sure you are getting one or the other or even a second pair of eyes. December Drills - Part 16 Since many of us are heading back inside due to cold or COVID, I will dedicate this month to drills I have found effective.... I love the reverse grip drill for improving ball-striking with the irons. Reverse your grip so that your lead hand is lower on the grip Make 3/4 swings till you get the ball airborne It keeps your hands in a great impact position, and forces you to rotate well. If you are a handsy player, you will top a lot of shots before perfecting this drill. Improvement and change take time but if you embrace the process of getting better, you’ll be well on your way. Drills are useful for ingraining new motor patterns but you can use a single drill long-term if it accomplishes the pieces you need for a more efficient swing.
