Uncertainty, is such a weird and uncomfortable feeling. We'll be closed for the next couple of weeks (or maybe more??) We're so grateful to God for being ok during these strange times. Our current staff, more like family, has been with us for 5+ years, and it's a blessing to be able to retain them despite not being able to generate income.... We have the most thoughtful landlords who have been pivotal in keeping our restaurant open in the #midmarket neighborhood of #sanfrancisco for the past 9 years. We know this isn't the case for most people and businesses, we definitely wouldn't have been able to make it this far or make it through this tough time if it weren't for them. We're also thankful for our loyal family of customers...those who wrote/called to check on us, and really just all of you who have continually supported our business for all these years- from our OG customers at our original location on #Folsomstreet, to the ones whose orders we know by heart, to the ones that went from weekly dates at the back corner table- to having their wedding catered-to making last minute injera runs to satisfy pregnancy cravings, to the babies we watched grow into little adults, to the ones that always come to celebrate the landmarks in their life, all the team-building meetings, our neighbors, all the office managers that keep us on their regular catering schedules, and the ones that get so excited to share their experience in our kitchen with their families, friends, and loved ones, we're grateful for all of you. For those who follow Ethiopian Orthodox traditions, we're currently in the middle of Gena #tsom which is the #vegan fast that preceeds Orthodox #Christmas which is celebrated on January 7th , every year. Here in the village, most people observe these traditions, so we've been doubling up on the amount of vegan food we make daily. Here, we're making a big pot of dokoko, a type of yellow split pea stew or kik alicha. Yesterday, a friend of mine, and fellow businesswoman in the village, gave me this dress as a gift. It's called a buffet dress. (Every time I hear the name, I think - what a great outfit to wear to a buffet- but I don't think that's why they call it that) This is the traditional style of clothes worn by women in the Raya region of Tigray. It's made from hand-woven cotton and detailed with intricate, colorful embroidery. The Raya people have a warm and welcoming culture. I'm... here alone, but I never feel alone. They have this saying here that goes- "Raya te lemidkaya, suss alewa, aytsedekan." It basically translates to- If you get used to Raya, she's addictive, and she'll never let you go. I think I'm addicted
