Posted @withregram @theartistshag My surfing buddy and fellow artist @gomez.bueno has a show of impressive new drawings that just opened at @eastern_projects_gallery in L.A.’s Chinatown. The symmetrical precision of these brush and ink portraits is surprising - it’s hard to believe they were painted by hand. My favorite of the group is the first one in my post, where the symmetry is broken only by the slight flair of the upper lip. We’re back! Join us MARCH 6, 2021, 5-8pm for the OPENING RECEPTION of @gomez.Bueno’s PARALLEL UNIVERSE. Masks and temperature checks are mandatory for entry, hand sanitizer will also be provided. Only 10 guests allowed at anytime, in 30 minute intervals. ... From the artist: Parallel Universe is a series of ink drawings on paper (24 x 19) created during the covid-19 pandemic. Due to the mandatory confinement and the social distancing, my wife was working from home and my kids were also distant learning from home. Because my studio is in my house, I had to refrain myself from making the smelly polyester resign sculptures and spray paintings that I was making before all this started. With ink if you make a mistake, it stays there because you can’t cover anything, but it doesn’t smell, is not toxic, you don’t need to have a 5 horse power compressor, or an industrial fan going while you are working. So a decision was made. Obviously I’ve done drawings before but never day after day for more than a year like this time. There are two groups of drawings in the series, the portraits and the compositions. Both are pretty symmetrical if not totally symmetrical. This practice is a little challenging but adds a sense of surrealism to the subject that I like. These characters and weird compositions became my social network, hence the title of the exhibition, Parallel Universe.
