The mask deal has been a bit confusing, for various reasons. Here's some recent research (see link to article below) about commonly used fabrics used to make cloth masks at home. A couple (of the many) takeaways: 1. a reasonably tight fit is important (reason for the elastic and metal piece to pinch over the bridge of the nose) 2. layered silk (as in silk scarves) works surprisingly well... 3. higher thread counts of cotton work much better than lower (I was unaware that thread count was a thing until an episode of Parks and Rec) 4. various hybrids (silk/cotton/flannel/chiffon) significantly increase filtration ability It may be a good article to share with friends who are making masks and others wondering if we're just winging it, which is oftentimes a legitimate question...the answer in this case is no. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov//articles/P/pdf/nn0c03252.pdf

Thanks to everyone who participated with the Beyond Tape matching donation to the Eastside Student Center! We raised $2600 total from Beyond Tape book sales and your matching donations! These types of programs and folks will be crucial to make up for lost time and instruction for our kids due to the pandemic. Many of us have been able to muddle through and do at least a decent job of keeping our kids educated, with the help of guidance and hard work from our teachers. ... Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, there are lots of kids with minimal resources and even less parental guidance. This program will help to level the playing field and build up our communities.
