1996 . . .... As a newly licensed director and teacher, I couldn’t wait to try out the activities with my son and begin to share my love of music with young families. The more I taught, the more my excitement grew. I saw children exploring and enjoying music as they gained tonal and rhythmic skills. Tonal Competence. . . . We mentioned rhythmic competence a few days ago. When your child can sing all or part of familiar, but not unfamiliar, songs in tune, she has achieved basic tonal competence. For example, if she can sing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star as well as a song that is relatively new to her. Many people mistakenly believe that the ability to sing in tune comes from some genetic trait passed down to one family member or another. But the truth is that if a c...hild’s music development is nurtured, and if they are consistently provided with rich and engaging music experiences, and surrounded with grownups who joyfully express themselves musically, regardless of their own abilities children can reach this musical milestone even absent of a parent who can sing in tune. . . .
