Join in the conversation with business leaders from across the country for our Spring Society Talk on April 7, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. ET. This fireside chat will be moderated by the American Cancer Society's CEO, Gary Reedy, and feature guest speaker Dr. Ned Sharpless, Director for the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Together, they’ll discuss the impact of the pandemic on cancer screening rates, and work being done to return to screening and follow-up care. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in many elective procedures being put on hold, and this has led to a substantial decline in cancer screening. As your regular facility for health care returns to providing cancer screening, it’s important that it is done as safely as possible. Learn how you can talk to your doctor and what steps you can take to plan a safe return to regular cancer screening in Cancer Screening During the COVID-19 Pandemic. The ACS recommends that people at average risk of colorectal cancer start regular screening at age 45. This can be done either with a sensitive test that looks for signs of cancer in a person’s stool (a stool-based test), or with an exam that looks at the colon and rectum (a visual exam). Learn more at cancer.org/guidelines.

As #BlackHistoryMonth comes to an end, we must recognize the importance of engaging diverse communities and consciously empower those we serve today and every day. Dr. Cynthia LeBlanc has been an ACS volunteer for over 30 years and has served in various capacities at the local, state and national levels, becoming the first African American woman to serve as chair of the National Governing Board of the American Cancer Society. She believes that: "Actions are easier when words are real." Thank you, Dr. LeBlanc for your leadership and contributions to advancing health equity.
Find resources to help you and your loved ones manage your lives through treatment and recovery, and get the emotional support you need. In addition to American Cancer Society programs and services, we can also help connect you to additional free or low cost resources from other organizations. https://www.cancer.org//support-progr/resource-search.html
In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we are highlighting community partners and volunteers who are making an impact in our communities every day. Just last October, Zhonnet Harper--who many know as Z--was honored as a Health Equity Hero at the 2020 East Bay Gala for her extraordinary work as Alameda Health System breast cancer care navigator. Z advocates for equitable, compassionate and culturally sensitive care regardless of social and financial barriers. She says I’m not here to navigate cancer, I’m here to navigate life. The American Cancer Society is truly grateful to have partners like Z helping us eliminate disparities that stand in the way of a person’s ability to prevent, find, treat + survive cancer.
Cancer knows no boundaries, respects no borders. The American Cancer Society works tirelessly so people like Jamil Rivers can not only survive her breast cancer diagnosis but THRIVE for her family. https://youtu.be/LoeiqpkoG-k
Today, we celebrate American civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. and recognize his legacy. We must remain focused on racial justice and health equity, as it will increase our cultural competency, provide us with a greater understanding of those we serve, and eliminate disparities as we move from the most comprehensive to the most impactful cancer-fighting organization. Reflect and decide how you will answer to Dr. King’s call to action: Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’

While multiple community-based projects are identifying local solutions to advance health equity, we can and must do more. Thank you, David Ford, for championing cancer health equity alongside us, we are in this fight together. #healthequity #blackhistorymonth #fightingcancertogether #americancancersociety

Chúc Mng Nm Mi ... No matter how it is said! We wish you health, joy, and happiness this Lunar New Year!
From all of us at your American Cancer Society. We wish you health in mind and body always. May your family find strength and security even when the road gets rocky. Despite an unprecedented year, we continue to push forward, make progress, and celebrate the lives of cancer survivors. Thank you for standing with us and supporting our fight for a future that is free from cancer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cOM7cIMrv4 Did you catch this great original animation on health equity during our October Gala? Check it out! ACS and ACS CAN are reexamining and deepening our efforts to address health equity through our research, programs, services, and advocacy. Most importantly, if we are to reduce cancer disparities, we need to listen to the experiences and perspectives of people with cancer, their caregivers, and their communities, and engage them in... the fight against cancer every step of the way. After viewing the film, we encourage you to reflect on what you observed and then connect with friends, family, and co-workers. Think about how you can apply a health equity lens in your daily work, decision-making, and interactions with others. It will take all of us working together to change the narrative for survivors like MaryAnn. Hear her story, continue the conversation with our Discussion Guide at cancer.org/healthequity, and learn how you can join the fight to advance health equity.
