Lo alimentan, le dan agua, lo protegen. Porque ese tronco moribundo es parte de la familia del bosque. Los hongos y las plantas se ayudan mutuamente al conectarse mediante los micelios y las raíces, mediante esta conexión intercambian alimentos y agua, muchas veces el hongo no puede producir su propio alimento y lo obtiene del árbol, a su vez el hongo le ayuda al las plantas a obtener o absorber minerales necesarios para su alimentación.
