imported Nopal pads or paddles are still showing signs of pesticide contamination here in the states. though this staple in ethnic cooking is consumed widely, the pesticides still being used are incredibly toxic. Federal inspections here in the Bay Area in past years have shown the same pesticide residue present, monocrotophos, an organophosphate and deadly nerve agent banned from use in the US. it is expecially toxic to children, and is responsible for the deaths of 23 schoolchildren when cooking oil stored in a contaminated container was used to prepare their lunch in 2013.
