John and I are pleased to announce the launching of a very important project that is dear to our hearts: the "Walking Backwards" website www.walking-backwards.com. This Cultural-Educational website, which includes videos and information by & about Native culture bearers from the Klamath River and other places in far Northern California, has been organized according to the different meanings of Charlie Thom's medicine name, "Walking Backwards". As Charlie Thom explained:... WALKING BACKWARDS means HONORING THE CEREMONIES - learning about, understanding, respecting and participating in the sacred ceremonies WALKING BACKWARDS means NATIVE CULTURAL REVIVAL - keeping indigenous cultures alive by understanding the history, learning the language, practicing the cultural traditions, and teaching the children WALKING BACKWARDS means PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT - protecting the sacred sites, keeping the waters and air clean, respecting the plants, animals and fish in their natural environments, and "cleaning up our own back yards" WALKING BACKWARDS means JUSTICE FOR NATIVE PEOPLES - advocating for respect and restorative justice for the Káruk people as well as for indigenous peoples throughout the world Sponsored by the Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center, the "Walking Backwards" website is the first of five projects that we are producing about Charlie "Red Hawk" Thom and other Native cultural representatives from far Northern California. Our latest production... a short educational piece about Sexual Assault, produced for the Siskiyou Domestic Violence & Crisis Center (SDV&CC). This is so very different from EarthAlive’s usual work, but such a worthy cause to support.
