Joseph Harris and Annie Jayne Haynes were both born in England, actually not far from where I grew up. Joseph came in 1887 and moved to Surprise Valley to be with his brother. He returned to London to marry his fiancee but she didn't want to move to American so he asked Annie whom he knew as she was an apprentice dressmaker, working for her Joseph's sister for several years. In 1891, at the age of 21, Annie married Joseph in London and two weeks later they came to the United States and directly to Surprise Valley where they made their home in the Cedarville area for 68 years. This was a happy successful marriage and they celebrated 60 years of marriage in 1951. Joe died 8 years later in 1959 and Annie followed in 1967. They had 8 children together.

I ran into Renee Sweet in Good Things a week ago and it made me think that so many of you have such a rich family history in Surprise Valley and Modoc. Here is a Sweet Family story for you: Jesse Robert Sweet was murdered while driving a team from Lake City to Fort Bidwell. He left behind a beautiful young wife, Rena Urana Beebe Sweet and two children, Celia Maude and Alfred Kenneth. I was happy to find a picture of them all on "Family Search" and added it to Find A Grave so their faces will not be forgotten. Anyone know where Celia might be buried? She died in 1950.

The Eagleville Saloon pool table is finally being restored. These pictures are before and after of one of the legs. The before picture shows the leg covered in black tar from the spit of chewing tobacco and the second picture shows the glorious Rose Wood, sanded and polished to its former glory. I know this would make old Bertie so happy as she cherished this table. #pooltable #pooltablerestoration #eagleville #eaglevillepoolhall #eaglevillesaloon

Branding day is a family affair in Modoc. This is the Cockrells and the Nolans at the Barber Ranch which is south of Eagleville and owned by the Cockrells. This picture is probably taken during the sixties. That's Charlie Nolan by the fence and Bob Cockrell by the fire, Charlie was first cousins with Lewis Cockrell, so the two families were close and helped each other out. The kids are likely the children of these two families. Got to love the chaps and the cool pose of the little guy next to the truck in the front. Doesn't it take you back to simpler times?

The teachers and children at the Eagleville school. Year is unknown but a wild guess would be Circa 1900. Perhaps if you recognize a relative we can pin that date down. Such a great photograph, given to me by Joyce Werner’s family. Thank you Werners.
