One of the techniques we use to help our patients heal faster with less pain: PRF PRF stands for Platelet-Rich Fibrin. It is created using a blood sample from the patient at time of surgery. It has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of AO (alveolar osteitis), otherwise known as DRY SOCKET. Dry sockets occur when there is a lack of a blood clot after a tooth is extracted. This term is commonly known in wisdom teeth extraction procedures, but can occur with an...y extraction. In addition to supporting blood clot development and significantly reducing the risk of dry socket, PRF can also help with: Reducing the risk of infection Expedited healing Reduction in pain And so much more! Follow up from my last post: This was a fascinating case!! We removed a large lesion from the upper jaw of a young female patient. The "before" photo is the frontal before, and it's hard to tell exactly what is going on at first glance. From the x-ray (shared earlier), you can get a better idea, but it's still perplexing. The "after" photo shows the cavity after we removed the lesion. Swipe for more details (and see what it looks like once we took it out). Pretty cool huh??! BONE GRAFTS Ever wondered how they work? Bone grafting / Ridge augmentation is an art that requires precision, surgical planning, and most importantly the right material. We often use these procedures to prepare an extraction socket for future dental implant placement, or augment a ridge that has vertical and/or horizontal deficiency to make sure we have adequate jaw structure for longevity of a dental implant. There are a few types of bone material that we use. T...he Gold standard is to use one’s own bone (Autograft), however sometimes we choose to use cadaveric bone (Allograft) when we want to avoid a second surgical site to obtain the graft. Lastly there are synthetic bone graft. The graft needs to be covered with a collagen membrane and stabilized with screws or suture to protect it and keep it in place, as well as to avoid growth of fibroblast into the graft. This process will create new, strong bone that we can later use for implants if necessary. Bone grafts actually require minimal recovery time, and my patients experience minimal pain following the procedure. Have you ever had a bone graft? What was your experience like? It’s hard to believe this was only 7 months ago... When the Covid-19 outbreak first hit, only emergency procedures were allowed.
