While the majority of our patients do whatever they can to keep their teeth healthy, some are unaware that things they are not doing can negatively affect their teeth. Sometimes, we find that the things we choose to avoid or long-time ideas and attitudes we carry with us are harming our dental health more than we can imagine. Many times, patients are not aware they are putting their dental health in jeopardy. Here are four things you may be doing that can cause significant d...ental damage or needless pain. 1. OPTING OUT OF TOOTH WHITENING- Our patients sometimes tell us they avoid tooth whitening because they have heard stories of tooth whitening harming teeth. To be fair, some people over-do tooth whitening, and they may have damaged enamel. Additionally, tooth whitening was once harsh and frequently caused sensitivity as the dentin inside a tooth came in contact with the whitening agent. Today’s whitening procedures are gentle and do not harm your teeth. A yearly or bi-yearly whitening can be the pick-me-up your teeth need and a boost to your confidence. 2. NOT REPLACING AN EXTRACTED BACK TOOTH- It is typical for a patient who is missing a front tooth to ask our dentist to replace it with an implant or a crown quickly. When it comes to back teeth, many of our patients are not interested in crowns or implants. This damages the traditional bite pattern and causes the jaw bone to deteriorate. 3. SKIPPING REGULAR DENTAL CHECKUPS- Many of our patients opt out of the recommended twice a year cleaning and exam. While this happens for different reasons, it is a quick way to serious dental problems. Many dental issues are hard to notice unless you know what to look for or your subtle symptoms are suddenly extreme. It is also essential to have plaque and tarter cleaned away regularly. 4. NOT TELLING THE DENTIST ABOUT FREQUENT AND EXCESSIVELY PAINFUL HEADACHES- Often patients view headaches as a medical problem and do not mention them to our dentist. There are several jaw and tooth-related issues that cause extreme headaches. You can save yourself pain and misery by asking the dentist about your headaches. Excellent dental health does not happen accidentally. Our staff is happy to work with you to be sure your teeth are in the best condition possible. We are all familiar with the advice to brush your teeth after eating. Chances are this is something you have heard since childhood. Perhaps that is why our staff and patients were surprised by a report that advises against brushing soon after eating. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, brushing as soon as you finish a meal can cause more harm than good. According to research, patients should wait at least 30 minutes after eating or drinking before brushing their t...eeth. Waiting to brush your teeth is particularly important if the meal or beverage was highly acidic. Studies exploring the effectiveness of brushing right after a meal discovered that brushing less than 30 minutes after completing a meal puts your teeth at risk of damage by acid from the foods or drink recently consumed. When you brush within 20 minutes, your saliva has not washed away the residual acid in your mouth after your meal. Dentists tell us that it takes about 20-30 minutes to remove the remaining acid in your mouth naturally. When you rush to brush after eating, you are using your toothbrush to force acid deep inside your teeth. Your enamel sustains significant damage from this process, and experts believe brushing too soon after eating is potentially worse than not brushing at all. To explore this idea, scientists tracked test subjects who had samples of human dentin attached inside their mouths. The subjects divided into three groups. The first group was a control group who drank the same amounts of acidic soda at the same times as the others, a second group was instructed to brush 20 minutes after drinking the soda, and the third group who drank the soda and waited over a half hour to brush. Results showed deterioration of the dentin in the control group, who did not brush, and a deeper level of damage in the group who brushed right away, and an improvement in the dentin of those who waited longer than 30 minutes to brush their teeth. Waiting a half hour after eating resulted in the best outcome. While our dentist is always pleased to hear that you are practicing good oral hygiene and brushing regularly, take your time after a meal and wait a half an hour. If you would like more information about the best times to brush your teeth, please contact our office.
