Repost from @sambulldurham September 22nd is World Narcolepsy Day! This day is recognized in order to work to bring more awareness to Narcolepsy, a condition that I live with. Awareness is essential, as studies have indicated that only 25% of people living with Narcolepsy are diagnosed and receiving treatment. A diagnosis of Narcolepsy typically takes 8-15 years (mine took 8) due to the lack of awareness and the reality that 60% of people with Narcolepsy are misdiagnosed (...I spent 7 years thinking I had Sleep Apnea). In the spirit of awareness, I’d like to share the side of Narcolepsy that I don’t usually talk about, what it actually means to me. Narcolepsy means feeling too tired to smile at a loved one. Narcolepsy means feeling depressed thinking of the 8 years I lost, too tired to live my life. Narcolepsy means feeling hatred for the doctors who looked me in the eyes as a child and said I was faking it. Narcolepsy means eating lunch quickly so I can crawl under my desk to take a nap. Narcolepsy means pretending to be energetic, worried that my sleepiness will result in judgement, or annoy those around me. Narcolepsy means fear for the day in 2 years when my insurance runs out. My medication costs $33,000 without insurance. Narcolepsy means learning to love challenges for the amazing opportunities they are. Narcolepsy means amazing and supportive friends and family that love me and help me take care of myself. Narcolepsy means amazing doctors (shout out to Dr. Thakkar @goldengatesleep ) who will stop at nothing to improve my quality of life. It takes a tribe. Yes this is the office, and yes those are my parents. They are constantly supporting and pushing us to do better. My mom is food pusher as many moms are she is always so incredibly worried that in the time of COVID I have worked to hard and am not eating. She comes to the office and literally feeds me. I am blessed beyond words, and even if I don’t always tell you I love you mom and dad.
