During this time many of us are working from home and our work ergonomics aren’t as good as we would like it. One of the most common issues many of us have faced is a stiff neck, neck pain and even headaches! Sometimes neck pain can progress and go as far as numbness into the fingers and hands. We looked through the books and found an exercise that is most useful for stretching the neck muscles fully and that doesn’t take up too much time! It is stretching out the part of th...e neck called Scalene, the primary function of the muscle group is on the sides of the neck that assist in bending and rotation of the neck. We would recommend this exercise for you in advancing mobility and releasing stiffness in your neck area. As a general rule you should always hold your positions for 15 20 seconds to feel a full stretch. Try to repeat this exercise at least 5-7 times on both sides to feels the muscles fully extend and relax. 4 simple steps to follow, along with photos for you to follow along with! Step 1- Lower one side of your shoulder by pulling your arm behind your back then lateral flex (bend) the neck to the opposite shoulder in which you are holding. Step 2- rotate your head up and then down. Leaving your head forward and tilting to feel the stretch Step 3- rotate your head to look up at a full diagonal position to feel the stretch on the sides and back end of the neck Step 4- from the up diagonal position rotate your head downward and bring your head to a downward diagonal position and pull your head down to feel the full stretch down the back of your neck Repeat this stretch on both sides of the neck with all three rotation movements to relieve tension and stiffness within the neck region. Remember to hold each position for at least 15 20 seconds and repeat 5-7 times for full relief!

Happy 4th and don’t forget to stretch! One of the biggest problems most people have during this time are tight hip flexors. The biggest hip flexor in our body is called, Psoas Muscle. Make sure you are stable and able to hold the position on both sides. Tilt your pelvis forward and upper body back and balance yourself on one knee for 20- 25 seconds. Don;t forget to alternate sides! Make sure you are paying attention to your breathing with slow and relaxed breathes. *Comfort tip!* To make it more comfortable you may place a pillow or cloth under you knee for balance and comfort.
