Happy New Year, everyone! What's your New Year's resolution for 2021? Have you picked one yet? If you struggle to stick to your New Year's resolutions each year, I have a few suggestions in mind for you. To help you see your goals through in 2021, remember these simple, yet effective tips:... Pick one. You might have a million and one goals in mind, but I challenge you to narrow it down to only one. Keep it small. Make sure your goal is manageable and realistic. Goals are goals, no matter how small. Thinking too big can sometimes set us up for failure. Don't be afraid to start small. Share with a friend. Enlist a friend to keep you accountable and offer to repay the favor. When goals are realistic, measurable, and specific, they can serve as fantastic tools to help you grow and advance in every area of life. Needless to say, I'm a huge fan of goal setting! Did you know alcohol can negatively impact fertility? Fundamentally, alcohol is a toxin, which can cause inflammation and disease in the body- especially in high amounts. So, what about a drink here and there? Can any amount of alcohol affect fertility? ... Studies on alcohol consumption and fertility can be conflicting, but here's what we do know 1. Excessive alcohol consumption in women can increase the risk of miscarriage and impact healthy ovulation. 2. Moderate alcohol consumption in women can delay conception. 3. Men who consume high amounts of alcohol result in reduced testosterone levels and speed production. Given these facts, if you're struggling to conceive or dealing with infertility, I highly recommend ditching the alcohol all together. Yes, that means BOTH partners! As a naturopathic doctor, I firmly believe there is a time and place for everything. But, there is no place for alcohol when trying to conceive! So, I challenge you: if you want to have a baby, give up the alcohol. Unfortunately, carrying a heavy toxin load is one common and serious cause of infertility Toxins come in all shapes and sizes, like: Pesticides on produce Cleaning supplies... Fragrance (perfume, candles, etc) BPA's in plastic Trans fats and processed foods Without even realizing it, most of us are exposed to these toxins on the daily. One way to limit your exposure to toxins (especially when dealing with infertility) is to ditch your household cleaning products! Most of these products are filled with toxic chemicals, like phthalates, formaldehyde, fragrance, and more. All of these toxins build up in the body, leading to inflammation, and eventually chronic disease (like infertility). Instead of using harmful household cleaners, opt for natural cleaning products, like: White vinegar Essential oils Branch Basics Non-toxic soap and water Even given the current pandemic, multiple studies have shown the effectiveness of soap and water on viruses (including the coronavirus). As women, understanding our cycles is absolutely necessary! Whether you are trying to conceive or prevent conception, learning about your cycle and how the female body works is foundational Tracking your cycle is important for 2 reasons:... 1. It can help you identify your fertile window and ovulation to increase chances of conception. 2. It can show the days you are NOT fertile to prevent conception. Your basal body temperature is one of multiple ways to track your cycle. You can also track your cervical mucus and cervical position to further ensure when your fertile window is! Here's what to do when tracking your BBT: Take your temperature first thing in the morning- before getting out of bed, drinking water, or checking your phone. Take your temperature at the same every morning. Use the same thermometer every day. Use a physical pen and paper to chart your temperatures, instead of relying on digital apps. What else to know about tracking your BBT: A consistent increase in temperature for 3+ days typically marks ovulation. However, every woman is different. So, it's important to learn your body. Keep in mind that alcohol, stress, infection, poor sleep, and more can affect your BBT reading. For the most accurate results, track your cervical mucus and cervical position, too. Sperm can live in the female body for up to 6 days. Meaning, conception CAN occur if ovulation happens within 6 days of unprotected sex. Learning about the female cycle can be overwhelming. But, once you start learning, it's hard to stop!
