Running has such a bad rap for being hard on joints, but your body has certain mechanisms that repair and protect you. Your bones strengthen with stress. Your nervous system is able to send you pain signals when you are starting to overdo it. I like to put my body through a little bit of stress, often, to keep it strong. In fact, stress can be so helpful that I use prolotherapy to stress old injuries to strengthen the tissues, IMPROVE function, and help folks heal from ch...ronic pain. Don’t be afraid to move, just listen to your body. If you want to consider something like prolotherapy to help with your pain, you are going to have to get moving now to condition and prime your body for the best healing response. While many chronic pain patients fear exercise may make their joints ache worse, the opposite is often true! Chronic pain is not typically useful. When you first injure yourself, your body feels pain to protect you from making things worse, but as you heal, ideally that pain should resolve.... So what causes it to become chronic when there isn’t a significant mechanical issue? Sometimes minor injuries or lax ligaments cause pain, or mechanical pressure on the nerves that your brain can perceive. But your brain is also capable of modulating pain perception when it isn’t so necessary so that you don’t have to feel it as much. You can have the same crappy joint, same disc herniation, same trigger points, etc but a healthier brain and your pain perception can be that of a person with NO chronic pain. It isn’t doing you any good. How to get a healthier brain? Move your body. Get blood flowing, carrying oxygen and nutrients to it. Talk to your doc about how to start if you’ve been avoiding it, but I typically have my patients start with lower duration and intensity and work their way up with both as tolerated. How often? Every damn day. I don’t know who taught anyone you are entitled to a pain free body that sits and doesn’t move. Our ancestors would have starved or been eaten by predators. Move every day! At MINIMUM 20 minutes. Plus, research suggests that frequency of exercise has the best association with pain relief. Move more often! I’m a naturopathic doctor. I believe in the value of living a healthy lifestyle for disease management and prevention. I also believe that vaccines can be of great value and I’m excited to get the COVID vaccine. I will admit also being a skeptic and squeamish about them, and that I usually skip the flu vaccine for this same reason.. but I feel that this time it will be more than worth the risks as the risks of getting the virus are greater (and yes, I’m aware that the flu sho...t is also this way for many/most.. it’s just not my favorite because I’ve gotten really great at fending off the common flu if I feel it coming on with homeopathy and hydrotherapy). Yes, you could end up an asymptomatic case or a mild case. But that is honestly taking a big gamble with your health and with the health of all those around you. Deaths will occur the more we keep gambling with the lives of ourselves and our loved ones.
