The Oakland Athletics won another game Wednesday night in the bizarre, fan-less, COVID-19 2020 season. How did they do it? The usual way, with good pitching and a visit from Dr. Longball. Yes, the home run -- four of them -- the dullest play in baseball. For the San Francisco Chronicle.... The official: Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman (26) and first baseman Matt Olson (28) celebrate their team’s 6-4 victory over the Texas Rangers in a Major League Baseball game on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2020 in Oakland, Calif. More from the archives: Thirty-five years ago today, the City of New York staged a tickertape parade down the Canyon of Heroes for Americans who served their country during the Vietnam conflict, which had ended a decade before. I only personally knew one Vietnam veteran; when I asked him if he planned to attend, he said, "No, Ross. We lost that war. No parade necessary." The official: Ten years after the end of the conflict, an unidentified U.S. veteran of the Vietnam War waves an American flag as he marches down the "Canyon of Heroes" during a tickertape parade on Broadway in the financial district of New York, May 7, 1985. Since it seems that there isn't going to be anything new to show you here for the foreseeable future, let's go to the archives, shall we? I had photographed the San Francisco Giants rookie sensation Tim Lincecum during spring training, but never once had an inkling that he was going to be a superstar. As fate would have it, when he made his Major League debut against the Philadelphia Phillies on May 6, 2007 in San Francisco, I was covering the game.... Beautiful light, exciting debut. But for Timmy, and for Giants fans, the best was still to come... The official: San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Tim Lincecum, who is making his Major League debut, delivers against the Philadelphia Phillies during the first inning of a Major League Baseball game, Sunday, May 6, 2007 at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Lincecum pitched 4-1/3 innings and got a no-decision in the Giants 8-5 loss. (D. Ross Cameron/The Oakland Tribune)
That Steph Curry -- his athletic talent transcends the basketball court. On Wednesday, he teamed up with pro golfer Phil Mickelson at the Safeway Open pro-am in Napa. It was every bit as fun as it looks -- except for the 101 degrees Fahrenheit.
The NFL football season is underway. Let the gladiatorial action begin!
