My Dear Friends of the Earth, Earth Day, of course, dates back to prehistoric times, in one form or another, though it only became a modern holiday half a century ago. That's when Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, who was disturbed that an issue as important as our environment was not addressed in politics or by the media, created the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. Earth Day is now celebrated around the world. On Tuesday this week, an article by Sandee LaMotte and publ...ished by CNN entitled Air quality in US dramatically worse than in prior years, says new 'State of the Air' report reports that the air quality in the United States is dramatically declining, leaving about 150 million people nearly half of America's population breathing unhealthy, heavily polluted air. The national senior vice president of public policy for the American Lung Association, Paul Billings, stated that We’re moving in the wrong direction, with nearly nine million more people breathing dirty air than in last year’s report. How sad it is. Not only are the environmental living conditions for humans worsening, but also that of countless animals and plants are deteriorating as well, resulting in a die-off of thousands of species, millions of animals and plants, and the destruction of the whole ecosystem that we all depend on. Our window is closing. We've had plenty of warning. We all must do more now to rebalance our Earth. This is obviously a daunting task, but we and our children will look back in 30 years and wish we had done more, much more. Most of the human race is under stress right now due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Respectful social distancing and the wearing of protective gear like masks and gloves are valid approaches to reducing its spread. Unfortunately, many are forgetting that the environment is under constant attack, and it is rapidly deteriorating. This is just my simple reminder that this is the only Earth we have, or that any of us will have in our lifetimes. It could be a paradise, but we must change our ways. Be less polluting.
