Diwali is the Festival of Lights. In lighting a candle on a dark night, prosperity and hope are brought into homes. However, in life it’s not always easy to find the light or even reason for why in all situations..... As you gain awareness of the dark, or recurrent thoughts that dampen your fire, may you have the courage to rewire one. Ask yourself what if the best case scenario did happen? And be bold enough to believe it. Positive thinking is an unstoppable force. The effects are multiplicative on your health & well-being. Yes, PCOS is a testosterone driven condition, while Endometriosis is driven by estrogen However, estrogen and testosterone are sister hormones, & easily convert into each other. People can have both PCOS AND Endometriosis.... Other common PCOS myths: People with PCOS are overweight. Weight is NOT diagnostic of PCOS. People with PCOS have cystic ovaries You can have PCOS without having any cysts on your ovaries. People with PCOS are infertile People with PCOS do ovulate, though often less frequently, and CAN get pregnant. Those are the top myths I’ve seen circulating Any questions? Ask away below.

While the exact cause of PCOS isn’t known, PCOS is associated with exposure to endocrine disruptors, like Bisphenol A (BPA). BPA is a chemical found in plastics. BPA changes gene expression and affects hormone production. ... In utero exposure to smoking, pollution, and pesticides is also associated with increased incidence of PCOS. It is the most common hormonal disorder, affecting up to 25% of womxn! In fact, PCOS is an ancient disorder, persisting in our genetic pool because even though it is associated with sub-fertility, or longer time to conception, people with PCOS are not infertile. In fact, in ancient societies PCOS may have improved energy utilization, especially during periods of fasting. PCOS is a syndrome, with a wide spectrum of symptoms & severity. While we have always had forest fires, modern wildfires pose new challenges to our health. Burning houses and industries release chemicals of concern including: Asbestos... Dioxins Toxic gases like carbon monoxide, Toxic metals (arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury) Plastics (BPA, phthalates) Herbicides and pesticides, Particulate matter Volatile organic compounds Exposure to hazardous air pollutants from wildfires is expected to contribute to an increase in emergency room visits due to cardiorespiratory concerns for the next three months (3, 4). Fine particles, 2.5 micrometers and below, are one of the main culprits, contributing to both oxidative stress and inflammation. A HEPA filter is a great way to limit your exposure to fine particles in your home. Long-term, exposure to fine particles may increase vascular inflammation, plaque and artery hardening, as well as risk of heart attack and stroke (5). Our bodies are equipped with mechanisms to protect us from air pollution. The first line of defense against fine particles are the fluids that cover your lung lining and respiratory tract. These fluids have been found to be high in antioxidants. Antioxidants provide an initial defense against oxidative stress from inhaled environmental toxins. Some of the antioxidants found in this fluid include: glutathione, vitamin e, and vitamin c (6). The California wildfires are spreading with unprecedented devastation. Though the severity of the current wildfires is unprecedented, they are hardly unexpected. Longer fire seasons and greater areas at risk were forecast years ago, with rising temperatures from climate change (1, 2). ... There are a number of studies on the effects of air pollution as well as how to protect yourself. For those living in an affected region, safety measures include: Limit physical exertion....Including reducing the intensity of your work-out. Close doors and windows Use a HEPA filter indoors If power recommendations for your area permit, use air conditioning Identify cooling stations in your city and county Maintain a supply of nonperishable foods Consider relocating temporarily Hydrate well, consider adding electrolytes to your water or drinking coconut water If you must be outside, use a particulate respirator. This will have either N95 or P100 printed on it and have two straps for a secure seal around your face. Asthmatics, pregnant women, children & those with heart & lung disease are at higher risk from smoke exposure. Part of having a perfect period is understanding your hormones and how to support them as they change across the month. Your menstrual cycle is characterized by three phases: Follicular phase... --Starts Day 1 that you have menstrual flow. --Estrogen, though low initially, rises through the phase and drives desire for connection and sociability as you progress --After your period ends, over the next ~13 days: ----Mood and brain function are boosted. ----Energy rises, confidence increases. **As you move through this phase, introduce challenging and energetic physical activities that you enjoy Ovulation --Approximately Day 14 of a 28 day cycle --Ends when the egg is released --Estrogen peaks, and progesterone starts to increase --Some women feel a dull pain (not normal) --This is when your sex drive & fertility is the highest! **Blood sugar imbalances can disrupt ovulation, so be mindful of refined sugars and processed grain products. Luteal phase --Starts after ovulation, approximately Day 15 of a 28 day period --Features a drop of estrogen and testosterone and the rise of progesterone --Body temperature (should) remain elevated until a menstrual period begins --Breasts may swell and become tender (not normal) --You may feel less social and outgoing --You may be more sensitive to pain **This is a good time to consume warm, well-cooked food, and magnesium-rich foods, such as raw cacao and soaked chia seeds **Select nourishing movements, such as yin yoga. Excess mental or physical stress during this phase can delay your approaching period What phase are you in today and what are you feeling?
