Features of a sick thyroid, or Euthyroid Sick Syndrome, often overlap with those of hypothyroidism and include a lowered body temperature, slow heart rate, low blood pressure, slowed breathing, altered mental status, weight gain and other symptoms generally associated with hypothyroidism. The only way to distinguish a sick thyroid from a disease condition is through thorough lab testing and clinical judgement. Learn more on our blog: http://bit.ly/sickthyroidB

While washing fruits and vegetables will remove many harmful residues, they do not get all the pesticides and chemicals used in agricultural processing that may seep below the skin making it safer to peel these foods prior to eating and thus losing all of that good fiber. Going organic may seem to be a financial burden, but so is chronic disease. Learn more on the blog: http://bit.ly/diabetesnutritionB

A meal plan for diabetes should be individualized as to likes, dislikes, food allergies, diagnosis, labs, health conditions, and weight goals. A diet that is made up of whole foods that include clean animal protein, organic fruits and vegetables, ample amounts of healthy dietary fat, and low glycemic carbohydrates is usually the mainstay of the diet. Restricting sodium to 2,300 mg also allows for control of leptin, the hunger hormone, as well as blood pressure if that is an issue. Learn more on our blog: http://bit.ly/prediabetesB

Botanically, ashwagandha is known as Withania somnifera and is a member of the nightshade family. Other common names for this herb are Indian ginseng and winter cherry. The active plant chemicals responsible for its adaptogenic benefits are withanolides, a group of steroidal lactones that possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that play a pivotal role in their many systemic benefits. Ashwagandha has been used in the past and is being studied currently for its role in at least eleven different health benefits. Read our blog and learn more: http://bit.ly/AshwagandhaAdvantagesB

One of the major issues with toxic exposure from pesticide use is that, in the United States, agricultural companies and farmers use pesticides before they can be labeled as dangerous. Take DDT, for example. Up until the 1970s, crops were sprayed with DDT, a pesticide that worked by destroying a pest’s nervous system. It was only after they had been used for a while that researchers found out that DDT put the wildlife at risk. The chemicals in the pesticide would gather in animals’ fatty tissues and lead to disease, sometimes even death. Learn more about pesticides on our blog: http://bit.ly/pesticidesB

Depression alleviated by ashwagandha is, in part, mediated by its stress and anxiety reduction effects, since both of these maladies contribute to the state of depression. Ashwagandha has been compared to the antidepressant drug imipramine in its effectiveness at alleviating depression whatever the mechanism. Eating a high-fiber diet by increasing vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and other plant-based foods is one of the best ways to boost your health, improve the immune system, and decrease toxins.
