Dear community, Most midwives have been swamped with families who have turned to home birth as an alternative to the hospital because of COVID-19. Some families have changed their birth plans because they feared hospitals would be overwhelmed, infested with coronavirus or because of visitor restrictions. (Most hospitals are restricting labor support to one person so they cannot have a partner and their doula or midwife with them during labor/birth.) There is a woman who reac...hed out to the birth community looking for a midwife. She is a Black woman who wants to and has prepared herself to birth at home. She is 20 years old, single, living with her parents, low income, on Medi-Cal and confident about her birth. We have helped her find an amazing Black midwife who has the availability to care for her. We don't want this midwife to absorb the financial burden. That is why we are fundraising for her midwifery fee so that this mom, baby and midwife are all supported for their wonderful and important work. Can you help sponsor this birth? A donation of any size would have a direct positive impact on several Black lives. The Midwife's fee is $6500 for prenatal, birth and postpartum care. Did you know? *Pregnancy-related mortality rates are as much as 4 times higher for black women as they are for white women. *Infant mortality is 2.3 times higher for black babies than white babies. https://www.marchofdimes.org/Peristats/ViewSubtopic.aspx *Medi-Cal does not cover midwifery/home birth fees. During these times of COVID-19 and amplified racial tension, the birth experience of a woman of color and her child can be especially sensitive. As midwives, part of our job before, during and after birth is to help transform vulnerability into power. Midwives are working hard to change birth outcomes for marginalised families through woman-centered, individualised holistic care. This work does make a difference, especially when the midwife looks like the mother she supports. You can help ensure this birth is free from the numerous challenges that face families of color during these times. Your donation can create a safe space for a family in need. Please support this birth with a donation today. Thank you. Funds may be sent to: https://www.paypal.me/BirthlandMidwifery?locale.x=en_US Please write *BeautifulBirth in a memo or message with your donation so we can track our progress.
