Back to basics: cavities are caused by the bacteria Strep. Mutans. They convert fermentable sugars into acid. The acid damages the tooth. Once the pH in your mouth is less than 5.5, your enamel is susceptible to cavity formation. Your saliva helps buffer acids but dry mouth (caused by genetics, medications, or drugs) prevents your saliva from maintaining the ideal pH and increases your risk of cavities. Most soda (including carbonated water!) has a pH of around 3.3 making it ...ideal for cavities to form. So what can you do? At home you can choose foods low in sugar and neutral pH. A dentist can work with you on reducing the bad bacteria. Don’t sip on sugary drinks all day, it’s better to drink them with your meal and then switch to water.
