Dougherty Station Library 07.02.2021

Do you know anyone in our community who doesn't have reliable access to the internet? The Library is offering Wi-Fi hotspots for checkout. The hotspot provides internet access to families and library patrons who don’t have a connection at home. The lending program will allow students, parents, teachers and families working and studying remotely, access to a free and reliable internet connection.

This event happens Wednesday, February 18th at 4pm. Registration is required. Join us for the first in the 2021 series of "Community Conversations. The panel discussion will focus on the County Board of Supervisors’ recently approved resolution declaring Racism as a Public Health Crisis.Come learn about the genesis of this important resolution and how citizens will participate in the process of achieving health equity and a welcoming and just Contra Costa County. This event takes place Tuesday, February 16th at 6pm. Registration is required. Join us for an introduction to propagating garden plants. You will learn how to clone plants from a single parent plant using vegetative processes such as cuttings, division and separation, and layering. For each of these techniques, you will learn how to identify which types of plants to propagate, the times of year that work best, the tools and planting supplies you need, and propagation steps. The type of plants that will be included in this program are perennials, softwood, semi-hardwood, hardwood, specialized stems and roots (such as bulbs) and succulents. Presented by Holly Sauer.

This event is the first in a 6 part series starting Wednesday, February 24th at 4pm. Registration is required. For middle school students, get an introduction to computer programming using C++, one of the most widely used languages. In this 6 part series you will learn the fundamentals of coding through different challenges. It is recommended that you come to all 6 sessions as they will build upon knowledge gained in the previous session.

This event happens tomorrow, Friday at 10am and it will be recorded and available for viewing for a short time. No registration required. The Lunar New Year, celebrated in several East Asian countries, begins February 12. One of the best loved Chinese customs is for businesses and community spaces to have a 'lion' dance to chase away the bad spirits. The Concord Kung Fu Academy has performed lion dances at several Community Libraries, and now share examples of their performances in this video. We hope to have the Academy back in the libraries, but until then, enjoy the dances and have a safe and healthy New Year.

Alta Journal recently launched the California Book Club, a new monthly virtual gathering devoted to literature from and about the Golden State. Many people all over the world turn to meditation to help them lead a more peaceful and healthy lifestyle. On Wednesday, December 9 at 6 p.m., Contra Costa County Library will host Jim Rose as he discusses how to find inner peace through calmness and meditation. Jim is a retired HR executive at Johnson & Johnson, with 35 years of experience in the field. Having practiced meditation for almost as long, he really seems to know what he’s talking about. This event happens Wednesday, December 9th at 2pm. Registration is required. The Legion of Honor and Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco present: Last Supper in Pompeii: From the Table to the Grave... Last Supper in Pompeii represents the largest exhibition on this topic to travel to the United States in 40 years. Originally organized by the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, the exhibition has been adapted and expanded for a California audience to bring to San Francisco a treasure trove of about 300 objects including magnificent Roman sculpture, mosaics, and frescoes; household furnishings and tableware; objects of precious materials; and more, with many of these wondrous pieces traveling to the United States for the very first time.
