Working primarily with acrylic paint and collage on canvas, Kerry James Marshall produces powerful images that reference a rich combination of African American history, religion, music and popular culture. Acting as an official fundraiser for Sybarite Productions Artist Relief Fund, LOVEisLOVE Worldwide will feature music, dance, art, and DJ talent from 24 major cities and countries around the world. Lei filled the walls of his studio with hundreds of photographs of Dr. King, and studied them until he held the essence of the man’s spirit firmly in his mind. He created a three-foot scale model of the sculpture amongst other sculpture models, before sculpting the 30-foot final version. A 30 foot fiberglass replica of the entire sc...ulpture served as a reference for the stone sculpture. The sculpture and the mountain are composed of 159 granite blocks that were transported to Master Lei’s studio in Changsha, China, where he assembled and sculpted 80 percent of the artwork. #MLKDay #martinlutherking : @zackowicz

Grants are focused on supporting artists who are traditionally underrepresented including artists of color, female artists and LGBTQ+ artists. Artists presenting work seeking to enrich and inform the public on important subjects such as social justice, civil rights, the physical environment and other contemporary issues will also be given preference. Each grant will be awarded for one of three dollar amounts: $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000.
