It's common practice to do a physical detox when you're not feeling well - don't forget your mind sometimes need detoxing, too! While social media offers many positive benefits, like business opportunities, networking, and the ability to instantly connect with friends and family, it can also turn into a slippery slope when it comes to mental health and productivity. Too much time spent on social media can prevent you from focusing on your personal relationships, career, ...and even the goals that you have. If you find yourself constantly checking your latest notifications or reaching for your phone first thing in the morning, it may be time to try a social media cleanse. Give your digital devices a bedtime. Being on your phone or laptop at night can affect sleeping patterns due to blue light. It can also prevent you from relaxing and spending time with family, friends, or your spouse. Start a new morning habit. Use a real alarm clock and try to avoid technology during your morning routine. Instead, adopt a morning ritual that starts your day on a positive or productive note like journaling, going for a walk, or simply enjoying a cup of coffee in silence. Delete your social media apps. Using your phone as a distraction is a cycle that is hard to break, but by removing the temptation to scroll in your downtime, you'll realize how much time you're actually spending glued to the screen. Get a new hobby or activity. The average internet user spends about two and a half hours on social media per day. Just think of the new pursuits that could be taking up that ""extra"" time! Try something that keeps you physically and mentally engaged, like gardening or playing an instrument. Limit the temptation. Often, we reach for our phones because they are within grabbing distance. Commit to keeping your phone in a different room while you're at home, keep it zipped up in your purse while you're out, and turn the settings to grayscale to avoid being attracted by the flashy colors and imagery that often attracts mindless scrolling. By limiting or detoxing yourself from the effects of social media, you may find yourself with a clearer mind and renewed energy to tackle what matters most to you. Taking the time to focus more on what’s in front of you, you can live more mindfully and free of the anxiety that often occurs when you feel out of the loop. For more guidance on living a stress-free life, call our office!

Have you thought about how amazing your brain is lately? It has the ability to recover from traumatic injury, stroke, and other damage at a remarkable rate. Although it seems inexplicable, scientists are constantly studying cases that show miraculous and unexpected recovery, and have found the explanation behind the magic: neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to adapt physiologically as a result of the interactions in our environment. Unlike computers..., which are built to certain specifications and receive software updates periodically, our brains can receive hardware updates in addition to software updates. Different pathways form and fall dormant, are created, and are discarded, according to our experiences. When we learn something new, we create new neural pathways and connections, literally re-wiring our brain! Here are some ways to promote your brain's own neuroplasticity: - Put yourself in environments enriched with novelty, focused attention, and challenge. - Do cognitive training exercises, like puzzles, every week. - Physical activity and good physical fitness can prevent or slow age-related neuronal death and damage to the hippocampus. - Intermittent fasting can promote adaptive responses in the brain's synapses. These small but regular changes can let you reap the benefits of increased neuroplasticity, including: - Recovery from strokes - Recovery from traumatic brain injury - Ability to rewire functions in the brain - Losing function in one area may enhance functions in other areas - Enhanced memory - More effective learning If you've suffered from a traumatic brain event or injury, or simply want to strengthen your body, connect with our office!

Is a chemical sensitivity worsening your Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism? You’ve probably heard of food intolerances to gluten, dairy, eggs, or other foods. But chemical intolerances, or sensitivities, have also become increasingly common. A person with a chemical sensitivity has an immune reaction to chemicals and heavy metals in air pollution, pesticides, plastics, adhesives, household cleaners, cosmetics, perfumes, and more. For the person with autoimmune Hashimoto’s hypo...thyroidism, a chemical sensitivity creates a chronic assault on the immune system, making it difficult to manage this condition. Why doesn't everyone have a chemical sensitivity? In short, everyone is different and reacts (or doesn't) to different things. The answer lies in how well the person’s immune system handles exposure. Several factors can cause a chemical intolerance: -The immune system reacts to certain chemicals or heavy metals as allergens due to an immune imbalance. - An individual has lost the ability to detoxify chemicals from everyday exposure. - An individual’s natural antioxidant status is deficient, increasingly one’s vulnerability to toxicity from chemicals. - A breakdown of immune barriers in the gut, lungs, skin, and blood-brain barrier increases the body’s vulnerability to toxins. So it's not necessarily the exposure to toxic chemicals that make one sick, but how well our bodies are able to handle them. These days it's difficult to isolate ourselves from pollutants, chemicals, and heavy metals. The best things you can do to limit the effect of these toxins are: Focus on toxin- and scent-free cleaners and beauty products Eat organic, whole foods Consume plenty of fibrous, antioxidant-rich veggies Drink filtered water For a more focused approach to repairing the body's immune barriers and alleviating chemical sensitivity, give our office a call!

The liver is the largest organ in your body and plays a very important role! Major functions of the liver include: - Regulating blood sugar - Producing bile to help the small intestines break down fat... - Breaking down old or damaged cells - Processing hemoglobin for iron - Destroying diease-causing agents - Storing vitamin A, D, E, K and B12 - Helping with clotting As you can see, it's vital that your liver is functioning properly. Along with the digestive system, the liver is also responsible for detoxification; if toxins are not removed from your body, it can lead to a host of undesirable symptoms. Toxins can be introduced to your body through the environment, unhealthy lifestyle choices, or internal toxins such as bacterial, yeast, or fungal overgrowth or undigested food. It's essential that you keep your liver in tip-top shape to support its efforts in detoxification and keeping your body functioning optimally. Reach out to our office to learn more about how you can support your liver function!
