Remembering Lincoln High's Tigermike Gordon Michael Max Gordon, a dedicated Lincoln High teacher, athletic director, and active community member for over 55 years, passed away on August 8, 2020. However, memories of his commitment to students and colleagues will live on. Mike was born in 1939 in Chicago to immigrant parents who fled Nazi Germany. The family moved to LA in 1944, residing first in Alhambra, then Westlake Park, and West Los Angeles. After graduating from ...Hamilton High School, Mike attended Santa Monica College, where he supported himself with part-time jobs ranging from newspaper vendor to retail clerk. Mike transferred to CAL State LA, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in history and a secondary education credential. He continued his education with many graduate history courses in at CAL State LA. Mike’s first teaching assignment was teaching English and history at Lincoln High School in 1962. In the classroom Mike’s teaching style reflected his personality: lively, direct, and funny. He cared for his students and helped them with college admissions and life problems. During the Chicano Blowouts of 1968, Mike and other faculty walked out to protest unequal conditions in public schools. In 1970 he started teaching Chicano Studies, and in 1985 he began teaching health. Mike had a lifelong enjoyment of sports and quickly became a strong supporter of Lincoln High’s Tigers, especially in track and cross-country, and varsity football. Mike’s active service to benefit Lincoln sports team eventually helped earn him the position of Athletic Director. He raised funds for team uniforms by selling snacks and soft drinks at games and on campus. Even his email address was Tigermike! Teachers and staff colleagues will also remember Mike’s contests to pick college and professional bowl games and March basketball winners, and his enjoyment of fantasy baseball in a league of teachers. Generations of past students attended Mike’s retirement fiesta at Luminaria’s restaurant in 2001. Until he was unable to do so due to declining health, Mike raised funds for Lincoln by selling snacks. Mike had a life well lived through his help given to those around him, particularly to Lincoln students and fellow teachers who became his friends. Mike is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margie Zepeda Gordon, his brothers Len and Steve Gordon, his daughter Diane Letulier, and grandchildren Emily and Aaron Letulier. Mike asked that any donations in his memory go with checks payable to Lincoln Heights Dollars for Scholars, P.O. Box 33286, Los Angeles, CA 90033, with memo: in memory of Mike Gordon.
