In honor of Black History Month, we tribute to Joan Johnson, who co-founded Johnson Products Co. with her husband George. With an initial investment of just $250, the two pioneered the black haircare company that developed iconic products such as Ultra Sheen and Afro Sheen who went on to build a multimillion-dollar powerhouse. George was the public face of the company, but Joan served as treasurer and active in running the business. In 1971, they went public and made history ...as the first black-owned company traded on the American Stock Exchange. Johnson Products Co., dominated 80% of the black hair-care market and by 1970, had annual sales of $12.6 million. When the couple divorced in 1989, Joan was given control of the company until it was sold in 1993. In honor of Black History Month, we tribute to Anthony Overton who was born into slavery in Monroe, Louisiana on March 21st, 1865. After the American Civil War, his family moved to Kansas where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in law. With just $2,000 of savings in his pocket, he founded the Overton Hygienic Manufacturing Company in Kansas City, Missouri: initially selling baking powder and other products to grocery and drug stores. Intrigued by the progress of women’s cosme...tics, which was an industry showing profits in the millions, Overton recognized that variety lacked for women of color. This prompted his endeavor into makeup and hair care under his High Brown product lines that had solidified his place in history. He developed safe makeup formulas, revamped how cosmetics were packaged and how they were marketed to them. Overton’s sales staff ballooned to 400 after relocating to Chicago in 1911 and the following year went on to manufacture more than 50 products, including hair creams and makeup.
