How do you take a really complex concept or idea and explain it clearly? Effective communication is grounded in many nuanced factors related to language and context. But we know that having visualizations to go along to with speech and text to share one’s ideas can go a long way to enhance communication. There is a lot of existing research in cognitive science on how humans create mappings between visual representations and raw data, so rather than running another experiment... to isolate factors that contribute to effective visualization, I am interested in creating software that leverage these findings to help designers create videos and visualizations that facilitate comprehension for their viewers. As a first step, I’m taking a data-mining approach by collecting widely-shared educational videos on platforms like YouTube, and examining the characteristics of these videos and understanding why and how they make ideas easier to comprehend.
