. -To Our Patients and Community: . A recommendation has been issued by the California Dental Association to suspend all non-essential and non-urgent treatment in dental offices in California for 2 weeks. .... This decision was made in consultation with state and national health experts and is being done to 'flatten the curve' of the COVID-19 virus outbreak. . Our office is still available for emergencies and for dental procedures that are more urgent in nature. We want to let you know that if you are in pain or discomfort, we are still here for you. . All patients with a scheduled appointment during the next 2 weeks are being contacted to reschedule their planned dental and hygiene visits. . Thank you for your patience during this unique time. We continue to provide a safe environment with high levels of infection control and strict standard precautions. . The reality of trying to keep people at home, rather than out in public, however, has lead to this decision. . Please feel free to call or contact us at any time if you have any questions or concerns. . Thank you, Dr. Denzler, Dr. Riordan, and our Dental Team . . -Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update- . Due to the current concern surrounding this virus we wanted to take a moment to assure our patients of the precautions we are taking. We continue to practice infection control using universal precautions to prevent disease transmission. ... All treatment room surfaces are wiped with medical grade disinfectant between every patient. Disposables are used in many cases and all other instrumentation is sterilized using a steam autoclave. Patients who exhibit signs of the flu such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath are asked to reschedule. Any staff member who shows signs of the flu, or has a sick family member, is asked to stay home. More frequent disinfection of ‘public areas’ of the office such as front office, waiting room, and bathrooms are being disinfected more frequently. . We are updating ourselves on proper coronavirus protocols DAILY. Our goal is to continue to provide an environment second-to-none in terms of your safety. . -Bridges- . If you are missing one or more teeth, your speech and your ability to chew might be compromised. If this is something that you experience, a bridge might be indicated to replace a few missing teeth. .... A bridge replaces the missing tooth with an artificial one and literally bridges the artificial tooth with two of your natural teeth. These type of restorations are fixed, which means that it can only be removed by your dentist. . If you have any questions regarding options to restore one or more teeth, and you think that a bridge could be a good option for you, call our office for a consultation ! . . -Braces- . Orthodontic treatment can be recommended to patients with an abnormal bite, crooked, or crowded teeth. The main purpose of braces is to align the teeth and to align the way upper and lower jaws meet. .... Some very important reasons why a patient could benefit from straight teeth are: . 1. Lower cavity risk . 2. Lower periodontal disease risk . 3. Improve smile, speech or chewing . 4. Lower the risk of tooth loss . 5. Prevent abnormal enamel wear . 6. Prevent jaw problems . Typically, malocclusions are noticed between the ages of 6 and 12 years old, and that is when your dentist would refer a patient to see an orthodontist for an evaluation. . There are many that might not have the chance to get orthodontic treatment as a child, so a referral will also be given to adults. . Teeth are in constant movement so we might find that as we age, our teeth are becoming crooked, making it harder to keep up proper hygiene. . It is never too late to get an evaluation for braces or Invisalign. Not only will you have a beautiful smile, but your oral health could be improved! . . -Bonding- . The bonding of dental materials to a patient’s tooth is a common way to restore damaged teeth or improve their esthetics. Bonding occurs between tooth structure and various dental materials such as porcelain and composite resin (tooth-colored filling material). .... The most common dental procedure is where a dentist or certified dental assistant bonds tooth-colored material (a composite resin) to the damaged part of your tooth to restore it to its approximate original size and shape. . The resin used can bond to the tooth with the help of a bonding agent. The restorative material is then placed, molded onto the tooth, and cured with an UV light. . After some adjustments to fit the patient’s bite, the restoration is polished, and the patient can proceed with their daily routine right away, only to be conscious when eating while still numb. . Improvements to bonding agents and dental materials over the years have made this a very reliable procedure. . Bonding is very technique-sensitive, however. Contamination by moisture from the mouth, incomplete light curing, and not following the exact steps recommended by the material suppliers can lead to failure. . We will always do our best to ensure our bonds are strong and long-lasting! . . -Bleeding gums- . . There are many reasons your gums could bleed, but generally it is a sign of inflammation.... . Gingivitis, literally means 'gum inflammation', and is one of the most common causes of gum bleeding. If you experience some bleeding when brushing your teeth, make an appointment with your dental care professional to discuss your oral health. Gingivitis is reversible and preventable. . When gingivitis progresses to periodontitis, it means that the inflammation has now started to affect the bone support around your teeth and the problem has become more difficult to treat and is no longer completely reversible. . There is also a condition that can develop on some pregnant women called pregnancy gingivitis, causing swelling, tenderness, and bleeding, which should improve after the child is born. . Taking blood thinners can also cause bleeding in your gums, and if the bleeding does not cease, contact you primary care doctor immediately, because the coagulation rate may need to be checked. . Brushing techniques and the type of toothbrush that you use can also be a reason for bleeding gums. You should use a soft or extra soft bristle tooth brush. Brush carefully and for long enough, but avoid being too heavy-handed! . If you are starting a flossing routine, it is normal for your gums to bleed at first, but do not worry, as you get consistent on this routine, your gums will get use to it and become healthy again in about a week. Keep up the good work! . . Following good oral hygiene and keeping up with your regular dental visits is key to prevent bleeding gums. . -BAD BREATH- . Bad breath happens to 50 percent of adults-according to studies. . What causes bad breath?... . There are many reasons for bad breath, some harmless, but others can be a sign of something serious. . Let’s talk about some of the reasons: . -Bacteria: the mouth is full of bacteria that become more active after we eat. If we do not follow up with brushing and flossing, it leads to unpleasant odors in the mouth. . -Dry mouth: it happens when your mouth does not produce enough saliva, not allowing it to wash out your mouth. Certain medications, problems with salivary glands, or breathing through your mouth can cause this to happen. . -Gum disease: experiencing a constant bad taste in your mouth, even after brushing and flossing, can be a warning signs of some sort of gum infection. . -Food: certain foods are more prone to cause bad breath like garlic, onions, coffee . -Smoking and tobacco: bad breath, stained teeth and risk of other health problems are related to tobacco use. Since the use of tobacco reduces the sense of smell, users might not be aware of the smell of their breath. . -Medical conditions: if gum disease and proper oral hygiene is ruled out by your dentist, then there can be another problem causing your bad breath, like sinus problems, gastric reflux, diabetes, and liver or kidney disease. We recommend you see your healthcare provider if this is the case. . Tips on how to improve your breath: . -Brush and floss daily. . -Use an alcohol-free mouthwash . -If you are a denture wearer, then clean them daily. . -Keep saliva flowing: drink plenty of water, follow a healthy diet, and chew sugar free gum if you need to. . -Quit smoking: not only this will help you with bad breath, but it will reduce your risks for other major health problems. . -Visit your dentist regularly: as always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let us know. . . . . -Benzocaine Use In Young Kids- . Benzocaine is a local anesthetic that is commonly used to relieve dental pain. You can find it in most drugstores under the names of Orajel, Anbesol, Hurricaine, and Orabase. It is generally seen as a safe and effective product. There are circumstances when caution is warranted, however. .... Benzocaine has been associated with a rare but serious health condition known as methemoglobinemia, which reduces the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream. This side effect is most common in children under 2 years old. It is recommended by the FDA that this product is not used on children under the age of 2, unless under the supervision of a healthcare professional. . The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parents or caregivers to soothe the pain of teething by using cold teething toys or massaging the gums with your finger. . . - Dental Anxiety - . Dental anxiety is a lot more common that you might think. Many people get nervous at just the thought of calling a dental office to schedule a visit. ‘The treatment might hurt.’ ‘I might have lots of cavities.’ ‘I can’t afford it!’ Whatever your fear is, we are here for you. . A few things that might help you prepare for your dental visit: .... -When calling to book an appointment, let the receptionist know that you are very nervous about coming to the dentist. Ask how long the visit will take, and what you should expect. This will help you prepare and have an idea of what will be done. . -The day of your appointment make sure you give yourself plenty of time to arrive at the dental office. When brought back to the room, let the dental team know if and why you are very anxious. Ask as many questions as you need.
