I am often asked, "When and why did you choose plastic and reconstructive surgery as a specialty?" I knew I wanted to be a surgeon since high school, but it was my senior year in college when I had that lightbulb moment. It was during my sculpture class at the University of Michigan,while I was socially isolating and sculpting this life-size clay anatomic figure when I knew I would pursue plastic and reconstructive surgery. In this moment, I became clear about my future path through art and medicine literally.

How many people can we really help? It can be overwhelming to think about considering the extreme need around the world. Our first patient in Uganda with a unilateral cleft lip repair. She and her twin sister are now identical. Reconstructing Lives one patient at a time.

Gilbert, a burn survivor, and his caretaker after reconstructive surgery in Uganda last week. He has improved arm and shoulder range of motion after release of his burn contractures. We performed thirty free surgeries and treated an additional twenty or so patients medically. The days were long but well worth it. Volunteerism has been one of the most rewarding aspects of practicing medicine.
