An emergency fund is critical. I like the concept of three months minimum, six months maximum in the fund. If you have debt you should pay that off with any excess.

This article is spot on about debt repayment...except for the part about borrowing against your home to pay credit card debts. I don't think the last sentence says it clearly enough, so I will emphasize that you DO NOT put your home at risk to pay off credit card debt...which likely represents overspending on your part.
