A story of rescue and recovery--what the VASF can do in the future At the close of our VHT, my renter neighbor told me of interior demolition ongoing, without p...ermits, and that historic fireplaces and plaster were being removed to create a group of modern white boxes (bedrooms) in a flat, one of 3 in a historic building built by the Arthur Fisk family after they moved their home to the corner of Hayes and Buchanan in 1898/99. I contacted the landlord and asked to save as many of the fireplace mantels (all about 120 years old) as possible. Only one was saved, but what a rescue! I contacted Leah Culver (for 714 Steiner) and Gina Centoni, historic renovation specialist contractor and co-chair of our most successful house tour ever, in the Presidio, and Gina advised she had a client who had been looking for such a mantel for several years. Bingo!! It was a perfect fit for her client's renovated Arts and Craft home. The homeowner picked it up from the demolished flat and it is now home, hopefully for another 100 years. Gina and her team's expertise in historic renovation made the necessary adjustments to fit the gas insert and its new home. Centoni Restoration and Development, Inc. Claude Monet's dining room in Giverny, France, where he lived from 1883 to 1926. This was the house’s central room and it left a strong impression because it wa...s rare during this period to have such a room glowing and shimmering with color. The walls, curtains and furniture are all in yellow and even the earthenware dishes, which Monet took out for special occasions, were painted yellow with the edges in blue. Various Japanese prints that Monet had collected since the 1850s decorate the walls, showcasing some of his most admired Japanese artists like Katshushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige and Kitagawa Utamaro.
