A message from Ridge, Colleen, and Team DaVero: All of us at DaVero are shaken to our core by the events of recent weeks. As most of you know, diversity and inclusion have been core principles of DaVero since its inception. So we are horrified by the senseless deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, and the many others that have tragically come before them. We stand firmly with both the black community and the demonstrators: we must stop systemic prejudice ...and violence of all kinds. It’s not difficult to see that what’s happening in our country today is many pots boiling over that have long been simmering. All of those pots are part of the same dish. First, we are witnessing the stripping away of any illusion that, as a nation, we have moved beyond prejudice: we have not. Just ask any person of color black or brown. Or any young woman. Or anyone who isn’t straight. Or anyone who doesn’t have papers. Far too many of our neighbors live each day in well-founded fear. Ultimately, that’s our fault we may not have created the conditions that cause their fear, but we have not actively done enough to change them. In equally stark relief now are the ramifications of decades of not being engaged in the business of democracy. The responsibility for the government we have is on each and all of us: we are not victims; rather, as a population we have been negligent, and as individuals we have (mostly) not been active (enough). Also sitting squarely at our feet is the responsibility for the perilous state of our environment. It has taken years of countless individual acts of commission and omission to bring us to where we are. It is naïve to think that anything will change without conscious individual efforts. Over my 69 years, I’ve discovered my true self through farming. As a farmer, you have no choice but to be pragmatic: if there’s a problem, you deal with it; if you’re doing something wrong, you change right away. In that spirit, I offer for your consideration two of my favorite sayings: If I always do what I’ve always done, I’ll always get what I’ve always gotten. Change is instantaneous; it is the decision to change that takes so long. Nearly 30 years ago, the day came for Juan Valladares (my farming partner since Day 1) and me to start planting almost 2000 young olive trees. I stood in the field, thinking about how best to tackle this daunting task. After several minutes I looked over and saw that Juan had planted six trees. So I grabbed a shovel and joined him. We each know it’s time to do something(s) different. The sheer number and magnitude of the problems that face us are overwhelming, but I encourage you to pick a task, whatever it may be, grab your shovel, and start the hard work. Your choices will probably not be the same as mine; that’s okay. You’ll be the best judge: just look yourself in the mirror and ask, what can I do today, and will I?
