I receive a lot of messages from newbie gardners about the unwanted rabbits, mice, rats and gophers that like to feed on their produce in their gardens. I think I might have found the solution to your problem. I have just learned about this technique as well and was eager to share it with you. it seems pretty organic. It is also a safe method for our pets and children as there are no traps or poisons involved. It is totally safe and if your pets and/or children touch it, at ...least they will smell good! Who would think the smell of the clean, fresh scent of Irish Spring Soap is hated by rabbits, deer and other mammaly vermin in our gardens? It is recommended to grate it down and sprinkle it around in your gardens as the smell repels them. It is not harmful to your plants or soil. Some people drill holes in the bars and tie it aound the perimeter of their gardens on their fencing at the level of your pests like rabbits for instance. It is recommended to keep the spacing no more than 3 feet apart. Some people cut/saw it into chunks and toss it in and flush it down gopher and ground squirrel holes to prevent them from coming up the holes around your garden and yards. So far this year, I have not had any problems with vermin in my garden this year. I did have a rat problem in my tomato garden years ago. I have block wall raised planters and I think I just might set the bars along the back wall fence about 3 feet apart and just let the bars set on the dirt. When I get that occassional gopher, I just might flush a few chunks down the hole. For kicks and giggles, I might try flushing some liquid Irish Spring shower gel, as it has the same scent, down their holes. If you have had problems with rabbits, gophers, rats, ground squirrels and mice around your homes, in your gardens, lawns and yards, let me know if you have tried this and if has worked for you?

It is watermelon season and we all wonder how to purchase a good, juicey, sweet watermelon. First think you want to look for and the most important is the field spot! Every watermelon has one. This marking shows where the watermelon sat on the ground as it ripened. As a rule of thumb, the color should be creamy and yellow. If it's white or light yellow, you may want to choose another one. Next, inspect the stem of the watermelon. The stem should be dry and yellow-brown. A... green stem may signify that the watermelon is not yet ripe and will lack flavor and sweetness. Choose another one at that point. Dry weathering spots and vein-like webbing lines are great indicators of an extra sweet watermelon. These spots show where sugar has been seeping out of the fruit. Weight plays a part in picking a good watermelon. The heavier the watermelon, the more water and sugar it contains. Look for a watermelon that is rounder and more evenly shaped, as opposed to an oval one. The rounder melons are better and sweeter. For those thumpers... lol! Give your fruit a gentle tap and listen to the sound it makes. If the pitch sounds deep and hollow, that indicates that the fruit has more water and is likely riper. You can freeze watermelon. Scoop out the watermelon with a little fruit scooper or cut into cubes. You might want to take seeds out if you purchased a seed watermelon. You will need to place each piece on a cookie sheet and freeze them so they do not touch each other. After a few hours when they are frozen solid, place them in a ziplock freezer bag. Make sure you suck all the air out with a straw so they don't get freezer burn.

A plant disease called Huanglongbing or Citrus Greening Disease is killing citrus trees in California. It is fatal for citrus trees and currently, there is no cure for it at the moment. Huanglongbing has already devastated the citrus industries in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina and Texas. The orange citrus disease is spread by a pest called the Asian citrus psyllid as it feeds on citrus tree leaves. ... Until researchers find a solution, California homeowners who enjoy growing fresh citrus fruit in their yards, and California farmers tending to $3.4 billion worth of citrus fruit trees must work together to protect their trees. Look for yellowed leaves on citrus trees. Nutritional deficiencies can also cause citrus trees to have yellow leaves so it is important to know the difference. Nutrient deficiency causes a similar pattern of yellowing on both sides of the leaf. HLB causes blotchy yellow mottling and is not the same on both sides of the leaf. To identify the Asian citrus psyllid and the disease symptoms of HLB, see the fact sheets, videos in English and Spanish and other resources at http://ucanr.edu/acp. If you see any trees that display symptoms of huanglongbing, contact your local agriculture commissioner. The best way to protect citrus trees from HLB is to stop the Asian citrus psyllid. Once a tree is infected with HLB, it will die. Diseased trees need to be removed in order to protect other citrus trees on the property, neighbors’ trees and the community’s citrus trees. https://ucanr.edu//Homeowner_Manage/What_Am_I_Looking_For/ The first orange trees were planted in Riverside, CA in 1871, but the citrus industry in Riverside, CA began two years later when Eliza Tibbets received two Brazilian navel orange trees sent to her by a friend at the Department of Agriculture in Washington. The trees thrived in the Southern California climate and the navel orange industry grew rapidly. https://www.latimes.com//a-uc-riverside-researcher-may-hav

Residents in Southern California are among those receiving mysterious packets of seeds apparently shipped from China, state officials say. No one knows why the seeds are showing up in mailboxes in 27 states or what they are. People are advised to turn the seed packets over to their county agricultural commissioner while the agency investigates the bizarre shipments. DO NOT THROW THEM IN THE TRASH!... At this point in time, we don’t have enough information to know if this is a hoax, a prank, an internet scam or an act of agricultural bio-terrorism, said Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles of Kentucky, CBS News reported. Unsolicited seeds could be invasive and introduce unknown diseases to local plants, harm livestock or threaten our environment, Quarles said, according to the network. USDA urges anyone who receives an unsolicited package of seeds to immediately contact their State plant regulatory official https://www.aphis.usda.gov//sa_b/sa-2020/sa-07/seeds-china For the State of CA: https://www.aphis.usda.gov//ppq-program-ov/sphd/california https://news.yahoo.com/mysterious-seeds-china-showing-south

Re-Purpose re-Use an old bookcase into a child's armoire. I was even thinking it would be nice to put near front door for the family/guests to hang up their jackets and put shoes/bags in when they come into your house.
