Dancing Keys Music Studio

Our Winter Piano Party sure was different this year. No stage, no sound system, no collaborations among multiple students. However, we had our homes as the grand stage, we had noises around the house to add to the ambience, and we had family and friends from different time zones to collaborate in cheering on our students. No matter the circumstance, music plays on, enhances our lives, and reminds us of our human connection.... Happy holidays from your music family at DKMS!

Meet Nio. He’s the first kiddo I’ve worked with on the autism spectrum (besides my son). He has limited verbal communication and is working on his fingers with occupational therapy. When we first started a few months ago, he wasn’t able to play 3-note chords and wanted to be done with lessons within 10-15 minutes. Now we’re jamming to The Beatles! He’s got a great ear and phenomenal memory. I only have to show him something once or twice and he’s got it. I’m constantly in awe... and feel so humbled to be part of his musical journey. Full disclosure that I have no training for working with children on the spectrum. I only know what I know as a piano instructor and as an ASD mom myself. His mom practices at home with him (and his sister) 6 days a week! We’re in this together and I cannot wait to see how Nio’s journey unfolds on the keys. You wanna know something else? Nio’s family came to my studio as a referral from another existing student. Turns out his mom and I know each other from childhood because our dads were friends! Her dad. My dad. Music.
