More than 500,000 Americans have now died from #COVID19, a tragic milestone. The California Women's Law Center mourns the many lives lost and joins in advocating for legislation to help end the pandemic and provide relief for those hit hardest by the virus, especially low-income people and women of color.
Today the US Supreme Court granted review of a challenge to the Trump administration's Title X regulations that cut off access to family planning services for millions of low-income and uninsured patients. As part of our effort to fight for reproductive health rights, in 2019 the California Women's Law Center filed an amicus curiae brief arguing for the immediate halt of the Trump-era Title X rules forcing health care centers that provide any abortion counseling or referrals... to give up Title X funding. Clinics have closed or reduced services, drastically decreasing the number of low-income patients they are able to serve. The gag rule and other harmful portions of the Trump regulations significantly impeded access to time-sensitive family planning and reproductive health services, disproportionately harming women in rural areas and women of color. Help us urge President Biden to reinstate the regulations that governed the Title X program prior to 2019. The California Women's Law Center is sponsoring SB 435 to give victims of online sexual abuse new powers to obtain justice and stop exploitation. California State Senator Dave Cortese introduced "The Ending Online Sexual Trafficking and Exploitation Act," which would allow a victim of online sexual trafficking to bring a civil action for damages against any entity or person who makes, obtains, uploads, re-uploads, or distributes in any naked or sexual material. On this National Caregivers Day, CWLC wishes to acknowledge hard-working men and women whose tenacity and commitment to caring for others has allowed people to stay in their homes and live safer, healthier lives. The pandemic has highlighted the importance of our professional and family caregivers and underscored the role they play in our communities an ongoing and critically pressing need as we prepare for an exponential increase in our older population over the next two decades. Nearly 75% of our caregivers are women who perform physically demanding work and are often underpaid. Truly, every day is Caregivers Day. Visit the Family Caregiver Alliance for more details. https://www.caregiver.org/
Breastfeeding has numerous health benefits for both mother and child. Despite laws requiring that workplaces and schools provide lactation accommodations, many new mothers are not aware of their rights and drop out of school, often because of barriers to breastfeeding goals. Compliance with the law is crucial to ensure students and employees know their rights and how to exercise them, allowing moms to care for their children, complete their education, and earn an income. Our ...goal is to ensure every California school district has policies in place that provide equal educational and employment opportunities for their pregnant and parenting students and staff. Please join us for a webinar on February 25, 2021 from 12-1pm, which will discuss our work and the importance of breastfeeding accommodations. One hour of MCLE credit is available. RSVP Here. https://us02web.zoom.us//421611/WN_fc83GLjMTUOupREi6pKfhQ
