Today we’d like to shine a little spotlight on CSU San Bernardino Dept. of Biology alum Teresa Ubina (BS, Biology [Pre-med option], ’15; MS, Biology, ’17), curr...ently a doctoral student studying neuroscience at UC Riverside. Teresa was our 2017-2018 Outstanding Undergraduate Student of the Year, served as president of the Student Society for Stem Cell Research, and, while a CSUSB student, she mentored a high school student in Illinois by helping her design her research experiments and spoke to high school students in the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine SPARK program. I enjoy sharing my experiences and guiding others in their pursuit of research, and I hope that someday I can help someone else discover their love for research in the same way that my professor did while I was an undergraduate, she said. We are so proud of you, Teresa! Our Heritage Heroes: Celebrating Hispanics of the College of Natural Sciences post series will continue this week so please show your love for our #CSUSBNaturalSciences students, alumni, faculty, staff, and leaders with Hispanic/Latino roots who enrich our campus, our community, and our world all year long. Please allow us the privilege of bragging about Rosyli Reveron-Thornton (BS, Biology, ’12; MS, Biology [Pre-med option], ’14), a CSU San Bernardino Dept. of Bio...logy alum who worked and studied hard all along her journey from @CSUSB to studying medicine at Stanford University’s medical school. Rosyli is one of more than 100 CSUSB students who benefited from education and training they received as students through the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine’s (CIRM) Bridges to Stem Cell Research program. CIRM is the state’s stem cell agency. CIRM students receive scholarships that allow them to carry out leading-edge research in the area of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine. Upon completion of the program, many graduates have gone on to professional and graduate programs or have been hired as research technicians both in academic and industry positions. We are so proud of how far Rosyli has come. She was on campus last November as an alumni speaker for the "Stem Cell Scholars Symposium: Ten Years of CIRM Bridges Successes" event that brought together biology alumni to share their experiences. In serious cases, SARS-CoV-2 lands in the lungs and can do deep damage there. But the virus, or the body’s response to it, can injure many other organs. Scientists are just beginning to probe the scope and nature of that harm. Learn more: https://fcld.ly/xeo6vfi
