Whitney Mathews was a third year when she went abroad with @csuip at @aixmarseille.universite for the 2019-2020 academic year. My favorite memory while abroadwas spending the day with my French languageprofessor and classmates in Marseille. She and another professor joined togetherand planned an entire day for us in the city.We started off by taking a walking tour of the city. They gave us a history lesson, telling us things that only locals ...would know. They then planned a scavenger hunt for us to find special landmarks in Marseille and the winners were given a prize. We ended the day with some delicious crêpes, eating at their favorite local crêperie. As we enjoyed our food, we laughed, drank cider that they so kindly bought for us and spent time with our professors as we overlooked the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, we all spoke French the entire time and it was an extremely fun way to practice the language in a non-stressful environment. It also gave us the chance to show off our language skills to our professors who had worked so hard to help us improve our French. I will forever cherish this memory as it was such a uniqueway to get to know myprofessor. Overall, my study abroadexperience not only boosted my confidence in my French language abilities, but it gave me the confidence to believe in myself. Gabriella Jeane De asis was a fourth year when she went abroad with @csuip at @waseda_university for the 2019-2020 academic year. I was sitting in my Tokyo apartment wishing I could be out in nature. I looked through my papers and found a random travel brochure, pulled up google maps, wrote out a rough itinerary, and left early the next day for a secluded hike. After a 2 hour commute, I was met with beautiful green trees, moss, waterfalls, and runn...ing streams. This was the other side of Tokyo, away from the busy streets and trains were tranquility and peace. I remember these little pink flowers that had fallen into the river and beautifully flowed downstream. If you added floating candles, it would have looked just like a spa. As I basked in the beauty of nature, I reflected on my study abroad experience and how much I had grown. I felt courageous. I had traveled across the world to live and study in a foreign country and now I was planning solo trips and going on adventures. I wasn't just brave, I was also capable. There are so many times I forget that about myself but whenever I think back on that hike I remember and remind myself of how far I've come. Interested in hearing more from our CSU IP Alumni? Miriam Gabriel was a senior when she went abroad with @csuip at the university of Granada for the 2019-2020 academic year I live in Los Angeles in a not so great neighborhood and my surroundings can sometimes become very overwhelming. When I first arrived to Granada, I remember feeling so safe and at ease. I had never experienced the peace of mind as I did when living in Spain. As Americans, we are consistently working and always looking forward to t...he next thing on our to do list. My study abroad experience in Spain really taught me to slow down and live in the moment and to me, that is a memory I will forever remember.
