Congratulations to former Cal State Bakersfield wrestler Ian Nelms on FATMAN (which he co-wrote & directed) winning the SPOTLIGHT AWARD and co-winning the AUDIENCE AWARD for BEST FILM at Film Fest 919. The Hawkeyes scored 123 34 points, more than 25 ahead of Oklahoma State, although they crowned just one champion. Penn State had an outstanding tournament and finished third with 70 12 points and two champions. It was the Nittany Lions’ highest finish since they were second in 1955. Jesse Reyes was a three-time NCAA Division II All-American, a two-time NCAA Division II national champion and an NCAA Division I national champion for CSU Baker...sfield Wrestling. #HispanicHeritageMonth He had two of the greatest wrestling seasons ever for CSU Bakersfield Athletics in 1983 and 1984, going 85-6 to finish with a career record of 151-22-1. He won the DII title in 1983 and the DII and DI titles in 1984. Jesse was a graduate assistant at his alma mater and then worked as an assistant at Arizona State, Oklahoma State and Michigan State. Joe Gonzales was a two-time NCAA Division II national champion and an NCAA Division I national champion for CSU Bakersfield Wrestling who competed in five world... championships and the 1984 Olympics for USA Wrestling. #HispanicHeritageMonth He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Member in 2015. #LegendsLiveOn His 1980 season ranks among the finest in college wrestling history. His 55-0 record set the national single season record for the most wins with no defeats and no ties while his 448 takedowns were also a national record. During his career, CSU Bakersfield Athletics was a DII program, so Joe had the unique opportunity to win championships in two different divisions. He won the DII NCAA tournament on March 1, 1980, including a 28-11 victory in the finals. Then, just two weeks later, he won the DI NCAA tournament, scoring 16 points or more in four of the six matches he won during his championship run. His junior season was almost as successful. Joe went 44-1 in 1979 and won the DII championship with a 22-14 win in the finals. He entered the DI NCAA tournament as the top seed, but dropped a thrilling 16-13 decision in the finals to fellow Distinguished Member Gene Mills of Syracuse. Many consider their exhilarating showdown to be one of the most entertaining college matches ever. Joe won a bronze medal at the world championships in 1982 and also captured the championship at the Tbilisi tournament, considered by many as the toughest tournament in the world.
