The Center for Sport and Social Justice (CSSJ) provides ongoing research, workshops, lectures, and community outreach. We provide a network for CSU East Bay students and faculty, community members, and academic experts to share innovative ideas and experiences on ways to use sport as a vehicle to create positive and lasting social change. One emerging focus of the CSSJ is to facilitate internship experiences that will allow CSUEB students to further develop their understandi...ng of social inequalities that exist in the community, and the possibility of inclusive sport and physical activity spaces to effect change in society and on the fields of play. We envision this high-impact educational experience playing a significant role in these students becoming well-rounded professionals and leaders in the field of Kinesiology. Click on the link in our About tab, scroll down to the "Give to the Center for Sport and Social Justice" button and help us meet our match! #givingtuesday2020 #givingtuesday is tomorrow, December 1, 2020! Are you ready!? As we look forward to that, let's reflect on the beauty of the CSSJ being aligned with so many wonderful nonprofit organizations that strive for inclusivity, one of which is Soccer Without Borders. Student representatives, Christina Rodriguez and MaKenna Duda have established great relations with the people who keep the Soccer Without Borders programs thriving within the Bay Area (and the program... is located beyond in many other locations). This video features one of the amazing co-directors of the CSSJ, Dr. Matthew Atencio. In this short clip, you can see how social justice and inclusivity within sport is a powerful vehicle for change. Through sport, individuals can feel empowered, while remaining physically active. That is what the CSSJ is about. We would love it if you would continue to support the CSSJ's mission as we go into Giving Tuesday.
As we approach #GivingTuesday (#GivingTuesday2020), here is a picture related to Sport and the #metoomovement from April 18, 2018. The panel highlighted books and podcasts from panelists and resources for those who have suffered sexual abuse. Topics related to insights on the politics and culture of sports and how that impacts gender identity, gender relations, and the safety of athletes. Ideas were shared about how to address and reduce sexual violence in athletic settings.... A video of the event is posted on our website at https://www.csueastbay.edu//p/videos-from-past-events.html and scroll down to the 6th video! As we approach Giving Tuesday, the CSSJ would like to reflect on the Youth sport summit at CSUEB held on Thursday, April 11, 2019. It was led by members of the CSSJ and Dr. Scott Brooks of the Global Sport Institute (Arizona State University). The CSSJ had an opportunity to share the community work that we have conducted with youth sports in our urban area. Bay Area community leaders involved in facilitating innovative urban youth sports projects shared their experiences and ...issues. Dania Cabello (Futbolistas 4 Life Film), Kim Woozy and Ashley Masters (Skate Like a Girl), and Ben Gucciardi (Soccer Without Borders) were represented and shared their relationship with the CSSJ. Excellent story on CSUEB Kinesiology alum Joe Morgan and his commitment to social justice. Joe Morgan’s support through an endowed scholarship has made a huge impact in the lives of many Kinesiology students at CSUEB. He will be missed. https://www.sfchronicle.com//With-Joe-Morgan-s-death-Major
