Though Crown Coach has sadly been defunct for three decades come next year, it has a real ally in Al Jennings, whose annual Phelan Ride & Drive brought together quite an array of Crowns, and a few Gilligs to boot!

"I had always had a particular fascination with West Coast school buses, namely Crown Supercoaches and Gillig Transit Coaches, and when my best friend [Gina Gregory, one of Falk’s school bus drivers] brought to my attention some surplus Crown Supercoaches for sale in Mountain View, California, I knew that was my opportunity. My dad’s viewpoint differed from mine regarding primary modes of transportation, but over the subsequent Fourth of July long weekend, we made the trip fr...om Southern California to Northern California and back to retrieve my new-to-me, 40-foot-long ‘car.’" "For those who remember, I was the teenager responsible for what used to be ‘The Buskid’s Webpage,’ also known as crownbus .com. Even though I have been an adult for longer than I care to admit, people still remember me as ‘The Buskid’ and ask if I was the one who owned the Crown Bus when I was in high school. Yes, that was me, and I still own one."

In the Fall of 1954, Bonita Union High School began using two new 79 passenger Crown coaches. These were the highest capacity busses they were to have until 1963... when the Bonita Unified School District purchased a 91 passenger Crown. Those first Crowns, numbered 1 and 2, were powered by Hall-Scott in-line six cylinder gasoline engines, connected to four-speed transmissions. They did not have power steering. Bus number 2 was damaged in an accident and sold to Crown Coach in 1970. Bus number 1 had a longer life. This photo was taken on February 6, 1987 during the process of converting the former school bus to a portable classroom for elementary band students. In addition to the blue paint job, the red crossing lights were removed, seats taken out and air conditioning units installed in the roof. The band instructor was trained and licensed to operate the vehicle and drove it to each school site as needed. The students sat on metal folding chairs as they played their instruments. I don't remember when this was no longer used or what happened to it. See more
