Tonight, December 21, 2020, the night of the winter solstice, and four days before Christmas, the heavens will declare the glory of God as the sky above proclai...ms His handiwork (Psalm 19:1). This rarity in the sky will take place in the southwestern sky within the first hour after sunset and will set before 8 p.m. Astronomers call it the Great Conjunction when Jupiter and Saturn will appear so close together that for a few moments they will seem to merge in the sky as a double planet appearing brighter in the sky. It is being called the Christmas Star. I suppose because of its proximity to Christmas and the account in the Bible of the Wisemen being guided by a star. In fact, some do believe the star that the Wisemen followed was a natural phenomenon in the sky which created an unusual brightness in the night sky. Others, myself included, believe this star was a supernatural phenomenon. Here’s why. The account of the Magi’s visit to the child Jesus contains 4 references to this special star (Matthew 2:2, 7, 9, 10). In verse 2, we learn there was a special star that rose in the sky which prompted them to come and worship, that is pay homage to, one who was born King of the Jews. How they knew this from this particular star we do not know, but there was a prophecy referencing a star in conjunction with the Messiah/King in Numbers 24:14. A star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel. Apparently, the appearance of this star signaled to them that this king of Israel had been born. So, they travelled to Jerusalem, the capital of Israel. In verse 7, we find out that Herod used the appearance of the star to ascertain when this child was born. Later on, Herod uses this information to determine the age range for killing the babies who might have born at that time (v. 16). Since Herod ordered the killing of all the boys two years old and under, they must have seen this star up to two years prior to arriving in Jerusalem. They had been travelling for quite a while. Verses 9-10 are remarkably interesting. You will notice that in verse 2, it says the star rose signaling that the King had been born. It does not say the star guided them to Israel or Jerusalem. They already knew it was the king of the Jews who had been born. The star did not have to guide them to Jerusalem. They already knew how to get there. When you get to verses 9-10, it seems the star, which they first saw two years earlier, reappeared after they left Herod. It went before them and came to rest over the place where the child was living! When they met with Herod, they learned from the chief priests and scribes the child would be born in Bethlehem, so the star was guiding them to the home where he was living at the time. It’s reappearance and guidance as they went to search for him in Bethlehem would explain the reason for verse 10, When they saw the star, they rejoiced EXCEEDINGLY with great joy. So, what natural phenomenon would appear and then reappear two years later at just the right moment and then somehow guide them to just the right location? Sounds like a miracle by the One who created and controls the heavens to me! So tonight, enjoy God’s handiwork in the night sky and ponder the power of the Creator and the miraculous Christmas Star that announced the birth of Immanuel (God with us) over 2,000 years ago. Psalm 148:3 Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, all you shining stars!
