At the 7.23.2019 City Council Hearing, we were subjected to yet another attack from our City. This time, at the hands of a ten-minute tirade from City Attorney Michael Jenkins. Apparently the City Council did not like us pointing out the hypocrisy of the City Council allowing an illegal business (Shockboxx Gallery), owned by a current City Councilmember, to operate next door to us with absolute impunity while our properly established business endured daily code enforcement harassment. The City is working hard to stonewall and prevent us from gathering information about their activities that resulted in us being forced to close our business. We are extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to meet and work with so many of our Hermosa Beach neighbors in their journey to improve their lives. We thank all of them for their years of dedication and support and are sorry we were forced to close our doors. Unfortunately, the pressure this City has brought to bear upon our business has made operating no longer a viable option. The constant barrage of enforcement visits and harassment, threats of criminal prosecuti...on and fines, coordination of negative public relations and requirements of soundproofing our entire building; have all finally proven to be too much to bear. They have done everything short of pulling our business license. It has been difficult for us personally and for our members. We must now focus on a long protracted litigation, in which the City is already doing its best to outspend and prevent us from doing any investigation into the covert and coordinated effort to remove our business from the M-1 zone. Thankfully we have a tremendous team that has the resources and resolve to hold our City and Councilmembers responsible for their actions, and eventually they will be held accountable. Regardless of what you think about our gym, it should be troubling to everyone that one or two of the City’s elected officials could use the City’s might and resources to extinguish a lawful, existing business just because they didn’t like it, or decided that particular business didn’t fit their vision for the community, or appease their constituency. We have spoken with many of you in the community and know a silent majority shares our concern. Those that know us well, as individuals and businesspeople, know we are neither frivolous nor vindictive, and have shared the risks we face in speaking out in our community. As our case unfolds and facts come to light, we are confident that the appropriate action will be taken to bring integrity back into our leadership and government process so this never happens to another business or individual again in our City.
