"The Language of Flowers in Asian Art" showcases the expressive power of flowers in the arts and cultures of Asia. Since ancient times flowers have been cultivated in gardens, and represented in art. The properties of flowers have come to symbolize both human and divine qualities. Our program featuring objects from the Asian Art Museum’s permanent collection focuses on six celebrated flowers - lotus, plum blossom, cherry blossom, chrysanthemum, tulip, and rose and the message they convey.

Worried about all the screen time your young child is getting these days? Do you wrestle with knowing how much screen time is appropriate and wonder how to balance it all? Bring your questions and struggles and join Kathy Hirsch-Pasek for a discussion about your concerns. Get practical ideas for helping your children navigate the digital landscape in healthy manner. Kathy is the Stanley and Debra Lefkowitz Faculty Fellow in the Department of Psychology at Temple University and a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. Her research examines the development of early language and literacy as well as the role of play in learning. Kathy is familiar with media and children and serves on several advisory boards with companies such as Disney Junior and Nickelodeon. Her recent book, Becoming Brilliant: What the science tells us about raising successful children, released in 2016, was on the NY Times Best Seller List in Education and Parenting. Join us for an introduction to propagating garden plants. You will learn how to clone plants from a single parent plant using vegetative processes such as cuttings, division and separation, and layering. For each of these techniques, you will learn how to identify which types of plants to propagate, the times of year that work best, the tools and planting supplies you need, and propagation steps. The type of plants that will be included in this program are perennials, softwood, semi-hardwood, hardwood, specialized stems and roots (such as bulbs) and succulents. Presented by Holly Sauer. He'll read from his book, Black Boy Poems (we have copies available!) and delve into his Black Boy Poems Curriculum. These workshops are for all ages. The Curriculum is common core and content standards aligned for middle school and high school English, Social Studies, Ethnic Studies and Arts classes. Conceived in the body and mind of Tyson Amir who is an author, poet, emcee, community organizer and educator with a M.Ed., Social Science credential and over 15 years of teaching experience. Tyson combines his experience surviving America as a black man with hip hop prose and original analysis to shape a very necessary revolutionary statement fit for the 21st century. Black Boy Poems was released on October 15, 2016, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Black Panther Party. Black Boy Poems and the Black Boy Poems Curriculum are the foundation of a social, historical, and cultural curriculum that is uniquely tailored to fit specific wants, needs and challenges of a learning community. The Black Woman is God virtual exhibition will explore the intersectionality of race, age, and gender, and will examine Black women's contributions as artists, healers, and social change-makers. The exhibition features new works by Black women employing painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, film/video, mixed, new media, and performance, showing that when Black women create, they are God.
