How did we make it through 2020? People. All year we've been grateful to be both supported by and to serve other people. A recent message from a supporter captures how we're feeling today: "I made a donation toward the Tardeada, and received the CRLA mask. I wore that mask when my wife and I went to vote. Here's a photo after we voted. I wore the mask for luck, and things turned out pretty well.... "Then, yesterday, I wore the mask when I went to my internet provider for a new modem. The young guy who helped me asked quietly if CRLA was 'to help immigrants.' I said yes, they provide legal assistance, often for immigrants. He was thrilled and told me about his friend who is being helped, somehow, by CRLA. I did not get any details, but the CRLA goodwill was abundant. New: Bakersfield Students Settle Lawsuit Over Summer School Cancellation and School Funding Bakersfield City School District agrees to obtain stakeholder input and provide interpretation for school funding decisions to benefit high-needs students More: https://www.crla.org/bakersfield-students-settle-lawsuit-ov... Dedicated funds from the state are supposed to be used to benefit some of our highest need students, especially students who are low-income, English Learners, or foster students. Last Friday, Sandra was admitted to the California Bar in a swearing-in ceremony conducted via Zoom by San Joaquin County Superior Court Judge Blanca Bañuelos, formerly legal director of our Agriculture Workers Program. Sandra knew early on that she wanted to be an attorney. Brought to the U.S. when she was one year old, Sandra grew up seeing ...the injustices her farmworker parents bore in order to provide a better life for her and her brothers. Sandra began volunteering at CRLA when she was in high school. She went to law school knowing that she wanted to work for CRLA because she believes in our mission. Now, she is a full-time member of our team. Sandra reflected, To me, it feels like my pre-law life has now come full circle, in the best of ways.
